Question Driver's Seat Recliner Problem

I've owned the 1995 SC1 only for three and a half months, and recently the Seat Recliner on the driver's side has been giving me trouble, and it seems to be getting worse.

The seat seems to work OK, but if I lean back on the seat back, like when I'm repositioning my butt, or if I'm reaching into a pocket for a phone, the seat back will fall backwards a few notches.

I had this happen once when I was accelerating hard out of a light, which is somewhat worrisome.

I seem to remember a seat recliner recall on my 1994 Saturn SL1, where they did some kind of fix -- does this apply to the 1995 models, and is the recall fix still available?

If not, are there any suggestions to what I should do to fix the problem?

the fix is to replace the broken reclining mechanism. you'll need to take the seat apart to replace it. Saturn retailers have parts and instructions.

Look for a sticker on the radiator support with 99C01, this would mean your car was already involved in the recall.

Heres is just a very small cut and paste of a portion of the recall.

If your car falls in the correct range and the repair hasnt been done yet, you should still be able to have it done.

REPLACEMENT OF FRONT SEAT BACK RECLINERS #99-C-01 - (Aug 9, 2004)
REPLACEMENT OF FRONT SEAT BACK RECLINERS
1994 and 1995 SATURN VEHICLES (ALL MODELS)

TO: ALL SATURN RETAILERS and AUTHORIZED SERVICE PROVIDERS

The Highway Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the customer has tendered it for repair. A failure to repair within sixty (60) days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time.

If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the customer may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

To avoid having to provide these burdensome remedies, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each customer and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. As you will see in reading the attached copy of the divisional letter that is being sent to customers, the customers are being instructed to contact the appropriate Customer Assistance Center if their dealer does not remedy the condition within five (5) days of the mutually agreed upon service date. If the condition is not remedied within a reasonable time, they are instructed on how to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DEFECT INVOLVED
Saturn has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1994 and 1995 model year Saturn vehicles. Some front seat back recliners were made with a part that failed to meet Saturn's stringent quality standards. The recliner gear teeth may wear excessively through repeated use, and may cause the seat back to slip partially rearward when force is applied. If left unrepaired, the wear will continue and may result in the seat back fully reclining when force is applied. If this happens while the vehicle is being driven, it could cause a loss of control and a crash. To correct this condition, Saturn will replace both the driver and front passenger seat back recliner mechanisms.

VEHICLES INVOLVED
ALL 1994 and 1995 Saturn vehicles within the following VIN range will require this campaign:

RZ244006 through SZ125162

I'll go look for the sticker, but my car is SZ229061, which falls just outside this range.

Then your car is not affected by this recall campaign.

If your VIN was SZ029061 then you would probably need to get the recall done at the dealership.

I found the original recall notice and called the number for Saturn. According to them, my car is affected by the recall and has never been fixed. It is eligible for the recall from any Saturn dealership at no charge.

Apparently, they expanded the scope of the recall from the original printing.

I'll call my local dealer to set up a service appointment tomorrow.

Thanks for the information!

Sounds good. It nice to be able to have something that old fixed and not have to pay for it.

Glad to hear GM is still honoring the NHTSA-mandated recall, since it would really be a bad safety problem for you in the event of an accident.

That's cool. I had to have this done on my 94 SC1 after they expanded the recall.

No issues before or after...or since it was replaced.

Well, looks like I have a short wait. Dealer won't schedule the maintenance until they have the parts in house.

Success. First dealer put me off three different times. Then, a week after they replaced my shifter cables, they closed their doors without notice.

So, I went to another dealer a bit further away. I called them Monday, made an appointment for early on Thursday. After being there a half an hour or so, they tell me they can't fix it, because they don't have the recliner parts. Further, since it is a safety issue, they can't give me my car back. Instead, they've called a rental. I balked a bit, but agreed when they told me they would pay for the rental.

One day later, they got the parts in, and it had been fixed. Then it was an ordeal to get through the horrible Atlanta Friday afternoon traffic to return the rental car and get a ride over to the dealership.

But, the car was ready, and it's now back where it should be -- in my driveway. And the seat backs are nice and firm again -- no racheting backwards like before.

Thanks everyone for their help and suggestions.
