Default 2006 Ion Starter/BCM issues

2 months ago, I started my car and got a horrible ticking noise. The noise continued to get progressively worse and then finally my car shut itself off and black smoke started pouring from underneath the hood. The dealership replaced the starter and sent me on my way. The same problem happened last week. Now the dealership is saying it's the starter again and "possibly" the Body Control Module. After replacing both parts, they are now saying they think it's my security system that caused the problem. It is a secondary security system that came w/ my car when I bought it brand new from another Saturn dealership. The mechanic just called to ask me how to opperate this system and to tell me he's going to have to disable it in order for the problem not to happen again. Has anyone ever heard of any of these problems? I'm getting very frustrated w/ the dealership and don't have a lot of confidence when a mechanic calls to ask me how something works. Also, how do you find a mechanic other than the dealership that is authorized to do warranty work?

do you have an aftermarket security system? because if they aren't wired in right, they can cause all kinds of problems. Also, they wouldn't know how to work something that didn't come on the car, that's just common sense. No one other than a GM dealership will do warranty work, and you're lucky to get that option, it's a recent development.

Stuck relays on aftermarket remote starters are known to cause continuous starter engagement.

I guess it is possible for an aftermarket security system that is wired to interupt the starter circuit to also activate it in error.

BTW, if you have an aftermarket security system on the car, you're lucky they're even touching the car under warranty, that instantly gives them reason to deny warranty claims.

Is it aftermarket if it came w/ my brand new car from the dealership? It's not something I had put in.

if it has the GM remote, it's not aftermarket, also, there is no chance that it would interfere with normal operation of your car, tell them to shove their diagnosis and fix the car, or pursue further action.

It sounds like an aftermarket security system if the dealership mechanic didnt know how to operate it. (I would hope they would know how the factory passlock security system worked)

indubitably my dear watson, it is also puzzling 1. that they would try disabling a system that can't be disabled, and 2. why they would put an aftermarket security system on a car with a pretty good security system already in it

The factory passlock security system makes it difficult for theives to hotwire the vehicle.

A secondary system has the potential to do a better job protecting contents and /or hit and run via shock sensors.

If it was a secondary system that was dealer installed it may have been a profit making item (they ran out of window etch, lol)

IMO passlock and onstar is more than enough for any ion. one thing people forget about is the fact that any aftermarket security or remote start system is not engineered for the car they're putting it in, so it will cause a problem, it's just a matter of when and how.

I did a little digging in paperwork and found that it is an aftermarket item called Prevent-A-Start from Prevent-A-Theft. Like I said though, it's not something I had installed. How does that affect my warranty if the dealership installed it? Should I throw in the towel and just have it removed? And is that logical that it could be causing the trouble almost 3 years later? Thanks for everybody's feedback; it's much appreciated.

this affects your warranty poorly, even though the dealership installed it, though that's probably the only reason they are still honoring your warranty. since you didn't ask for it (or even if you did) I would push for free removal of the parasite and a refund for the item. Unless you're in a high crime area (and I mean like a little white girl in the middle of 8 mile high crime) there's no reason to have anything more than what you have built in to the car, do you have RKE? or is yours a basic model? also if you have onstar, you have a lowjack equivalent. any ion has an engine immobilizer built in.
