GM Says It Has a Hybrid that Can Beat Toyota

Quote:
David Welch from Business Week: Every throne has its challengers, or pretenders in some cases, and Toyota's hybrid crown is finally getting a bit of a test. Not only has Ford said its Fusion hybrid will have a better fuel economy rating than the Camry hybrid, but General Motors is making a play to beat Toyota, too.

This is good news. In addition to GM finally seriously entering the hybrid marketplace, the fact that they are introducing the technology on the Vue in order to compete with Toyota seemingly indicates that GM sees a future for the Saturn brand. Let us hope that this is so.

Um....the article mentioned the upcoming hybrid VUE (that wasn't news) as well as the hybrid Tahoe/Escalade/Yukon. There is no mainstream car in that list from GM and I fail to see this as anything but a complete fluff piece of "journalism." If Saturn ends up going away, I suspect you can just cut 'n paste Chevrolet Equinox in place of Saturn VUE in the article.

A credible "threat" to Toyota on the hybrid scene would be something from GM that can compete with the Prius or Camry hybrid in terms of fuel economy. Offering up a bevvy of 3 ton SUVs that STILL get fairly bad mileage even with their "hybrid" systems isn't going to cut the mustard.

Cheers,
