Default Awd rdm?

Hi, the AWD on my 04 Saturn Vue will make a ratcheting noise in the rear rather then engage while front is spinning on ice, is this normal?
I read a topic earlier about the RDM having problems, what is this?
Thanks Les......

Sorry Les, not normal. Sounds as if it's a dead one. Some may suggest that you change the fluid and see it that helps. Mine was making a horrible noise during regular driving. When the system engaged, I would get this noise like a cat was in a grinder at high speed. Then would get a burning smell after using it. Smelled like burnt rubber. Took it to Saturn and they told me the RDM was dead and that a new one would be 2k installed. IIRC, wasn't there a recall on the '04 and older awd VUEs for the RDM?

I think it was a TSB, and it was to basically neuter the RDM so it didn't activate as quickly.

I put RP Synchromax in my RDM, others have used Mobil 1 synthetic stuff and Pennzoil stuff. When was the RDM fluid last changed? If it's been a while, you might want to consider doing a drain/fill/drive/drain/fill regiment a few times to make sure its nice and clean in there. I'd probably do the drain/fills with something cheaper (ie the Pennzoil, though I think someone mentioned gear oil could work for the RDM) and then put a nicer fluid in at the end (ie Mobil 1 or RP).

If it makes the noise just when the RDM engages (ie: front wheels are spinning) then it is likely somewhat normal. Both the RDM's that I have had in my Vue have both made some sort of noise when the AWD engaged.
