Default NYT: GM CEO Has "Presided Over the Most Sweeping Transformation of GM Since the 1920s

A new feeditems entry has been added:

NYT: GM CEO Has "Presided Over the Most Sweeping Transformation of GM Since the 1920s"

Quote:
William J. Holstein, Op-Ed Contributor to the New York Times: General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner has allowed his designers to recapture car design leadership with products like the Cadillac CTS, the Saturn Aura, the new Chevrolet Malibu and the revived and visually dazzling Camaro. The cliché that GM makes only gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles is years out of date.

Nice to see that someone "gets it."

If Rick Wagoner's charimanship is judged on product, its a smash
hit. Assuming a five year pipeline, you're starting to see the new focus on product really come through: CTS, Malibu, GMT-900s, Aura, Impala, VUE, Lambdas, etc.

Not to mention vastly improved interiors across the board.

Rick Wagoner gets that in the end, the product matters. Standing up to the union - HOME RUN! Bringing in Bob Lutz and getting rid of Ron Zarella - HOME RUN! VEBA - HOME RUN! Trimming more than $9 billion in expenses - HOME RUN!

This guy is the best GM has had in a long time. He needs to stay.

This is a worthwhile article. Holstein argues FOR R. Wagoner while many observers have said that the Big3 management needs reshuffling if they were to benefit from a bailout. I generally agree.

As far as 'getting it' is concerned , though , I think Mitt Romney's approach is possibly more functional/feasible -- insofar as Mr Romney would take steps [as eliminating executive cafeteria] to moderate/defang UAW resentment , in the interest of generating a co-operative future....

Holsteins' piece lionizes Wagoner for limiting labors' share of the corporate till , but doesn't mention paring back on managements'. This is consistent with some criticism on this board , that the sacrifices made are being made by labor. Holstein is not beyond occasional criticism of managerial practice , as a recent interview about compensation attests:

I agree with all the positives you've mentioned about Rick Wagoner, but I don't believe he is capable of trimming GM of all the old school deals and poor labor agreements GM is currently obligated to. IMO he will not go far enough to make GM survive in today's current economy.

GM needs someone like Albert J. Dunlap, a professional corporate downsizer. He was known as "Chainsaw Al". Drastic changes needs to be made, GM has not gone far enough to survive.

Is the union the reason that GM can't shutdown divisions?
GM is stupid along with the others if this is the case.

Its ashame that a bargain basement car company Hyundai can go out on it first try like the Genesis and GM can't with any of there brands.

I hardly say that Rick Wagoner was a win win for GM.

AS long as GM and Ford however can keep there trucks as the number 1 and 2 they will always have a hard time changing.
