This is what I paid today, 18,000 CAD after fees/taxes.

Hope GM will stay in business.

Is this a cash deal or what are the financing terms?

About $14,768.62 USD if anyone else was wondering (but not wondering enough to look it up like I did). XR or XE, other options? What are Canadian taxes and fees like?

GM is supposed to have the bridge financing they claim they needed in the short run -- in the longer term a sale of Opel and or Saturn would include assets AND liabilities (like warranties) so far as I know.

I got a black XR(standard: 17" rims, StabiliTrack stability control, cruise control, 7 speakers.....), the oil pan heater also comes standard in Canada.

IMHO for the same price I can only get a MAZDA3 sport GX/auto/ac with no power windows. The Astra is a great german compact car; I think it's much bigger than MAZDA3 though.

You must be from Alberta. None of the other provinces have only 5% tax.

The 2008 XR 5dr manual is now going for $14,380 incl Freight/PDI in Canada (cash purchase). This would equate to about $11,800 US. Taxes would be on top of this. Prices have really dropped although I suspect you would have to add auto as there would be few manual 2008 Astras left.

Don't think Opel is going anywhere as thats GM's bread and butter,as well it touches the other GM brands Holden and Vauxhall. It would take a 1984 At&t style breakup of the company to do that, which was under much different circumstances than what GM is facing.

On Dec 7 I was driving home from Walmart past the Saturn dealer in NW Calgary. They had Astras with '$6500 off' signs in the windshields.

2008 3dr XR, heated seats, 17" alloys, dealer installed armrest/cupholder.

When bargaining was done they took a total of $7100 off list, plus $4000 for my $2000 trade. Too good to pass up but I am concerned about parts.

I love how this car drives and looks, a killer deal, hope GM survives!
