Saturn Retailers May Buy the Brand from GM

Bradford Wernle and Jamie LaReau from Automotive News: As part of its restructuring proposal, GM has told Congress it will consider all options for Saturn. That leaves Saturn's future uncertain and dealers considering all options, including buying the brand.

Anything can happen.

But I can't see a business model where the dealers would buy the Saturn name. Someone still has to manufacture the vehicles.

The whole thing is going to be a mess. GM just can't eliminate any brand. State dealers associations have put in place strict laws governing the termination of a dealership with manufacturers paying out or buying out the 'value' of the dealership. Millions of dollars that GM does not have. And these are state laws - not federal laws. Just look what GM had to pay to eliminate Oldsmobile.

The correct business model is Toyota. One brand that sells everything. Although there is Lexus in the mix.

Should be interesting.

Now there is an idea. The retailers buy the brand name and shop out the manufacturing to whatever factory gives the best proposal for the vehicle. It will just be like sneakers and clothing.

I'd rather have the Dealerships owning the brand than some Chinese/India Company....

Hmmm...maybe it means that if a deal is agreed upon...maybe if the dealerships buy the brand...striking a deal to get Spring Hill back to manufacture parts for Saturn alongside the Traverse being built there...or maybe Wilmington or Kansas...

Just like AMC. That was a roaring success.

This is a complete pipe dream. The dealerships aren't going to buy the brand because the dealerships don't have any money and little access to money themselves. And then, as was mentioned, they'd have no manufacturing. So they'd be dependent on a practically bankrupt company to produce their only product. I'm sure those dealers who are already potentially going to lose millions are going to be lining up for a chance to risk even more capital on a company with a proven record of bumbling. Where do people get these stories?

That's great! The retailers buy the brand from GM and then they sell.....what, exactly? Without GM there are NO Saturns. Face it guys, Saturn may disappear. It's not personal, it's business.

Exactly. What cars would they sell? Saturn can't survive without the economies of scale and platform sharing from GM, and lately even that doesn't seem to work.

Even if they did have the money to buy the dealerships, they wouldn't survive making cars @ the prices they sell them now. The Big 3 manufacture parts on a large scale. You can't get price breaks on those parts the way the Big 3 do now. To ask an outside vendor to make 20,000 parts instead of 500,000 would result in a huge price increase. That price increase would cause the price of the car to go up. If people aren't buying cars now @ today's prices, they sure aren't going to buy them next year with a 40% markup.

Prediction: The Vue and Astra (Mexican made) will be folded into buick. I hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling that's where we're headed.

Pardon the bad English but, ain't gonna happen. Nope. Unless GM keeps Saturn alive, consider it dumped and gone.

Judging by the look of the 2010 Equinox, I'd say the Vue is just...gone. Buick doesn't need 2 different SUV's and with GM cutting nameplates, the Vue is expendable, unless or even if they keep Saturn. They won't just take the Vue and slap a tri-shield on the grille.

The Astra? We might not see it here at all. If Buick gets a Delta II premium compact car, it definitely won't be a hatchback, it'll be a sedan most likely based off of the Cruze.

This would be a perfect time for this to happen. It would turn into strictly a service/support/resale/restoration network. There would be no need to manufacture new cars, since all the presently made Saturns are look-alikes anyway. This would preserve the brand and support for those existing cars that are truly Saturns, without the burden of selling cars that someone could (effectively) buy as some other make.
