Flashback Friday: 1988 Saturn Prototype

Quote:
Up until this year the general public had really only seen one picture of the original Saturn prototype that was taken when it was unveiled to the automotive press in 1984. However this year, thanks to the General Motors' collaborative GMnext 100th anniversary website, a bunch of never-before-seen photos of Saturn prototypes from the company's archives have made their way onto the Internet.

Looks a lot like a period Cavalier, but then again, that upright, boxy configuration was the style at that time.

Since all styles tend to be cyclical (cars get square, cars get round, repeat), that look seems to be coming back in vogue.

One of the guys that was at Gates for a long time (my former employer) was telling me once about the Saturn Prototype they had there in 1987/1988 (he wasn't sure). It was only the front half of the car. That's all they needed since they were developing the belt tensioner for it. But the car was fully functional and had casters on the back corners, so it was possible to drive it and they did drive it around the back parking lot.

Fascinating how the design developed.

Does anyone know why the Saturn headlamps were mounted inboard?
It is a convenient feature for identification , but why ??
