It's a traditional steel body ... same as the other GM lambda crossovers. Saturn has moved away from plastic for a variety of reasons.

One of the reasons they moved to steel is so the ride would be quieter, which I like, but I do miss the dent resistance. Another is because more of their styles are rebadged to other GM lines, this way they use the same steel bodies.

they were talking about older Saturn cars, which had the polymer-based dent-resistant side panels....

Not to cause an argument but, I don't think of my VUE as a car. I know a bunch will chime in that it's a cute ute and car based, unibody blah blah

when picking up my Outlook and while pointing out some rub marks from the tailgate on the 'bumper' i stated don't want this to rub right down to bare metal the sales manager told me, ".... see this seam line everything below is 'plastic' above it is metal !...."

So the bumper at the tailgate is below this seam line and therefore plastic . . . AND they did adjust the tailgate, so no more rubmarks !

The test (?) like they tell ya when you're buying used vehicles, a magnet will not 'stick' to plastic or fibreglass (bonder?) !

Although it tends not to 'stick' to aluminum either !

GM has been using urethane bumper covers on many of its models since the 1970s when the first "energy absorbing" bumpers were mandated ... not really the same thing as "plastic" body panels.

Thanks !

It does seem to be a heck of large amount of red "plastic" below this seamline in addition to the black "bumper".

.... which took a test hit monday afternoon from the rear by a driver in a parking lot talking on a cellphone in slick snow-covered conditions (%$%#@&) He got off lucky that time !

The rear bumper is indeed plastic or urethane, but underneath is one heck of a steel frame. I hate to see what happens to any car or truck that rear ends an Outlook.

me: Scratch and small fold on my rear bumper cover.

him: Totally trashed right front bumper (as in all clips broken, and styrofoam leaking all over the road :-), and a trashed right-front headlight assembly.

It's a good thing I didn't have the drawbar installed in my hitch, or he would have even more front-end damage...
