People are whining about not being able to get their car fixed. If Saturn goes away, every GM dealer will do warranty work and any mechanic can do work on one. Saturns are nothing special.
The resale value won't change enough to matter, the resale on Saturns is crap anyway. Besides getting rid of your car before 10 years is a bad financial move, no one should do it and you should be penalized.

I would expect that if the Saturn brand goes the way of AMC I should be able to receive service at another GM dealer. There is a local Chevy dealer that has a good reputation and could provide good service and be able to take care of my ION. The problem could be if a serious problem occurs the techs will more familiar with Chevy than Saturn. For basic service such as oil filters and such I will be OK. I do not expect my ION to have any resale value because I am going to run it into the ground. Of course a Saturn dealer would offer me more for a trade in than a non Saturn dealer. My 1997 Saturn SL 1 automatic that was getting long in the tooth brought me $1250.00. One of the concerns that I had regarding my S was that after ten years original parts are no longer made. I suspect that will be the case with my ION after 10 years. What troubles me is that the people who work at my Saturn dealer could be unemployed. They are very good at their jobs and exemplify the Saturn philosophy of putting the customer first. I like these people and I have known the service manager since he was a service writer at my previous Saturn dealership. It was on his recommendation that I brought my ION. I will be OK and if Saturns are no longer available I may stay with GM. It depends on how I am treated by the GM dealer that I chose to go to IF Saturn is closed out. I am hoping that GM will chose Saturn over Pontiac but according to sales figures Saturn sales are awful.I read in an automotive newspaper that the combined sales of Buick in the US & China are higher than Saturn. There was also a mention of how the Chinese will perceive the fact that Buick was discontinued in its country of origin. Buick is a best seller for GM in China & has been popular there since the early 20th century. So if it comes down to a question of Pontiac or Saturn I choose Saturn . What GM decides is unfortunately out of my hands. The question is why are sales in the tank. Is it because there is a built in public perception of Saturn that is not going to be erased no matter what the ad campaign is? I think that Saturn has a great line of vehicles but to be honest the quality glitches of the last few years did not help. I refer to among other things, the quality control issues surrounding early model IONS, the VTi transmission on the VUE, the many assorted quality problems on the L. It has been brought to my attention that the first year L {2002} was awful. I do mean to slam Saturn but only to point out that GM management once again crapped up another car division. I have been told by my Saturn dealer that if IONs were being made they could sell every one of them. A used ION does not last long on the lot. I am not knocking the Astra but thet are not selling even now that there is $5000 off list. The Astra is beginning to grow on me but I have seen very few if any here in northern New Jersey. Could the high price of a fully equipped Astra be one reason? How about on ads on TV or in print? In retrospection stopping ION production was not a smart idea. I think that could be one reason Saturn sales have slumped this year.
Now that Saturn is up & running and has been for the past few years it could be too late. Saturn is caught in the "perfect storm"- GM mistakes being corrected only to be caught in a terrible available credit crunch forcing GM to take drastic steps to survive. It seems that once again the workers could be paying for serious mistakes made by senior management. I will be sorry if I cannot buy another Saturn. What truly upsets me are all the people who are going to get screwed. I guess that if Saturn closes GM will send me a letter letting me know that my warranty will be honored by any GM dealer, parts will be available and even list local GM dealers near my home. I will even bet that these dealers will receive from GM a directive to treat me with royal gloves so I stay with GM . I ask then what will all those workers get? What will the people at my Saturn dealer get? I will tell you this-nothing absolutely nothing and it stinks. Perhaps the owner of my dealer will have some sort of severance package but they will be unemployed and it will be nothing that they have done.

cheap, fuel efficient, small..... very very small, great for a single person.

I'm all about sub compact cars. after initial economy, maintenance costs and parts replacemt costs are important also.

huge fan of the rabbit, diesel, cheap, efficient.

Saturn, as a truly distinct brand, has been dead for a few years already. It's over.

My days of buying any vehicle from GM are done. And that's not because of any sense of "loyalty" following the Saturn debacle, but because they just don't make anything that I feel is up to the same quality standard as the competition. They make cars of inferior quality (for the money). That is the ultimate arbiter of who lives and who dies in an industry.

Cheers,

Well i will be switching to Nissan if they do away with the Saturn line. I own a 2001 Chevrolet S10 (not made anymore by Chevrolet) and now they are toying around with dropping the Saturn line. Time to switch.

Nothing. I have an Oldsmobile Intrigue, I just go to the local GM dealer and get my parts there, no big deal. They don't cost more or anything. You can still see where it used to say Oldsmobile outside the building, and their license plate frames still say it. They must have ordered a whole bunch of those.

Owner central online still works and you get a neat website that gives the brand history. Just go to Oldsmobile.com and see for yourself.

Sure it sucked when Oldsmobile went down, that was the oldest car brand around. But it happens, life goes on as does just about everything else.

I would hate to see Saturn go, but GM seems to be lost with their brands. They have been giving Chevrolet the nicer cars instead of cheaper, they really need to make Saturn all about hip young cars or it will be dead. Really GM, just bring in the entire Vauxhall line minus the VXR (=G8) and drop the AURA (=VECTRA) since the new Malibu is newer anyways and the Outlook. Possibly hold on bringing the Meriva and Zafira for now. Bring the rest right on over though.

Also GM, stop making so many clones. Chrysler tried that, didn't go over well.

Honestly, I hate to say this but Pontiac needs to be the one to go, and they need to dump half the current Buicks and use upscale Chevys in place. Just move the G8 over to Chevrolet and call it an Impala and maybe even rename the Solstice the Pontiac and make a tradition of selling one "Pontiac" at a time at the Chevy dealer for the enthusiast. Make every redesign a big surprise and different than anything else GM sells and offer limited editions. And what's up with GMC anyways, are they really needed too?

If Saturn does indeed die off (or get axed), then when my two current Saturn vehicles (a '91 SL and an '08 Sky RL) both die, I'll switch to either Nissan or Audi.

I can't stand anything Ford (except the Shelby), and even if they pulled out a miracle and survived I wouldn't buy from them. Chrysler won't survive. It will probably die within months of GM, if not first. Honda I might consider, as the civic (i think) is built 93% in my home state of Ohio, and I have a friend who works at the Marysville plant designing interior parts on the accord. But besides Nissan and maybe those two Hondas, I refuse to even consider anything Asian-owned. But in all reality, I'd probably turn to German-built. They have some damn fine engineers over there. And they can turn out a decent looking product too.

As was said here before,"life goes on". Yes I'll miss my Saturns, but, more importantly, I'll regret not having the ability to deal with my Saturn retailer for sales and service. I can only hope that the people that work there will be able to find either another job in the same company or that they will be able to get another GM franchise (Buick-Opel) or even another car company. If any have to move on, I wish them well and hope they find something quickly. Depending on what happens, I will make every effort to continue using them.Since I also drive a another brand they sell, I will still go there. Since GM now allows Saturn warranty work to be performed by other divisions, I'll probably keep using them for my VUE. Who knows, maby they will still be selling Saturns after this settles down--theres always hope.

You can still buy an Oldsmobile, it just says Buick on the front now and its a little cushier on the inside. And you'll still be able to buy a Saturn but it will have a bowtie on the front and be called a Malibu or Traverse. They're all the same anyway. The real bummer is when your dealer that you've dealt with for years goes away regardless of the brand.

There's an Orphan Car Show in Ypsilanti [MI] held in June. Saturn would become eligible if/when the brand is dropped like Plymouth and Oldsmobile.
