GM May Rebuild Saturn Rather than Kill It

Jonathon Ramsey from AutoBlog: When it comes to Saturn, General Motors is a little stuck. The plucky brand that promised something different and then turned into much the same hasn't seen critical acclaim or profitability for more than ten years. GM has halted funding for new Saturn products, and its plan to Congress indicated that a sharp focus on Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.

This sounds good but there are no sources cited or even references to "unnamed sources" (aka leaks). The upside is that hope still exists, but the downside is that rebuilding a semi-autonomous entity currently operating without its own factories, design and engineering staff, and its own models of vehicles takes financial capital and lots of it.

its all pretty much wishfull thinking. Saturn as we know it will be dead as soon as the current models run their course of lifespan. No they won't shut their doors in the next couple of years.but it is going to happen.a renewed GM cannot operate a division that has not proven it worth. It's obvious that Saturns failed in its mission with the rebadged Opels.Chevrolet sells more impalas per year than the entire Saturn line combined.with those kinds of sales numbers being racked up by the current line of Saturns, do you think there is any quick fix? certainly not with the current range of models, and the time it takes to develop new models is just to long.the one answer might be, to simply rebody and rebadge current top selling GM, american models,as new Saturns.but thats not going to happen.

In an article I had posted in another thread...it would be nice to see GM reinvent Saturn.

But, the real problem here is that, when you kill off the only production plant that you had and retool it build Chevrolets (Spring Hill), and build Saturns alongside of other GM products...How do they expect to "reinvent" Saturn and go back to the Grass roots beginning that Spring Hill had as a production facility...what are they going to do? Build ANOTHER Saturn Production facility that builds only Saturns again?

That would cost ALOT of money, and I don't think that there are any towns in the immediate future in the rolling hills of any state that would be willing to take a risk on GM right now.

Just my thoughts.
