General Motors "Never Knew What to Do" with Saturn

Quote:
In an article about Saturn, NASDAQ reported that retailer Carl Galeana told the Detroit Free Press earlier this week that "GM has totally mismanaged this brand." He added, "if it's a failed brand, it's because GM never knew what to do with it."

"One obstacle to selling Saturn...." This guy is obviously an idiot who knows very little about Saturn.

Extrapolating from a phrase that was widely reported in the media: GM will "sell or close down" Saab and Saturn", newspeople and the public in general have misinterpretated that there is actually a Saturn to sell.

There are no "Saturn" specific designers, factories, engineers, workers, union contracts, engines, transmissions or anything else left to sell since it is no longer a wholly owned "subsidiary" of GM with exclusive and specific physical assets to market.

As to the headline of the story: Anyone on Saturn Fans since it's inception could have written that and probably in a single draft with dates times and places right off the top of his or her head. It's so obvious it's ridiculous. And sad that it went on since the mid 80s and still no one at GM figured it out. It's scary. But lets prop em up with a tax bailout.

I just want to scream.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

I think GM is on the right track now with Saturn but it needs to hook the brand up with Buick and Pontiac dealers and give it wider distribution. GM needs to allow any GM dealer to service Saturn also.

A friend on mine wanted to buy an Astra coupe but her local Chevy dealer won't honor the warranty. She would have to drive an hour to get any warranty service. she ended up with a Civic. Lost sale for Saturn.

Dindak: Amen. There's only a 411 day supply of Astras, but lets find yet another way not to sell them. And I don't think that's warranty policy is even true any longer. IIRC Saturn has been folded in & can have any warranty work done by any GM dealer, if what I have read is true.

Besides it's a GM Warranty regardless of the brand. The Chevy dealer simply doesn't want to deal with it or doesn't know how. Parts from Belgium after the new Astra comes out and isn't offered here [anyone heard of any plans for the 2010 Saturn Astra ? Anyone ? crickets chirping] are going to be a problem for such a small # of cars sold. Especially if no one will work on such an "orphan". Foreign car, no future dealer support, no parts available locally. Your friend is probably way better off with a Civic. Service on an Astra in the future will be sort of like trying to get an Opel Kadett serviced @ Buick in the late 70s. At least there are dealer and independent outlets who will work on a Civic.

But they've done all they're going to do with Saturn. GM has been and continues to be clueless.
