Post CNN lists Saturn as one of GM 10 most significant cars

Interesting that NOW they decide that Saturn is significant!

See:
http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/...fortune/7.html

I don't know whether this is a compliment or an insult!

And Popular mechanics rates Saturn as one of the 10 cars that damaged GM's reputation since 1970 along with Vega, the X, The Aztek, V8-6-4, the diesels, the Cimmaron and the Hummer H3, Chevette.....
the EV1 was on the list as well.

Saturn (1991-2002) was most significant. It's not often that GM would launch a wholly owned subsidiary that didn't share powertrains or platforms with other GM divisions.

Unfortunately lightning never strikes twice... The sad part was GM was also competing with itself. I was a past Olds, Buick buyer that switched over. GM made a big mistake dissolving Saturn...

I guess that makes me a real winner--I owned at lest 4 of these cars, and 76 Chevette, 80 Citation and 83 Phoenix,85&88 Cimmaron not to mention 9 Saturns!

The reliabiltiy of my 1980 Buick Skylark was horrible, but I really liked the size and the packaging. Everything was just about right.

I remember the chrome metal hubcaps would fly off the 13" wheels whenever you hit a bad hole in the road. The bumpers were aluminum, the Buick hood ornament looked good.

Someone talked to me about that article, and many of the points they mention are either completely wrong, or are said without taking into consideration the context of the time. For example, they say that the s-series wasn't really fuel-efficient... yeah right, it was just as efficient on the highway as the Honda Civic of that time and more efficient than the Corolla and even the Tercel, but that doesn't matter to PM. They also say that the engine wasn't powerful... by present standards, no it isn't, but at the time most compacts had less than 100 hp, or just at that level, plus the Saturn S-series was relatively light. In 2000, Car and Driver did a comparison of 13 small cars, and the Saturn SL featured amongst them, of all the cars, it was the fastest in the quarter mile (16,5 seconds at 84 mph), the fastest to 100 mph and they said that top-gear acceleration was amongst the best of those compared.

Contemporary accounts also mention Saturn as being one of the biggest GM success stories.
