Flashback Friday: 1994 Saturn Cycling Calendar

Quote:
Saturn has long been a big proponent of an active lifestyle. Today, you'll find Saturn supporting marathons all over the country, but years ago Saturn sponsored a cycling team. According to the 1994 Saturn Cycling Calendar (cover pictured above), the team originally "came together in 1992" and was made up of "a collection of young amateur cyclists from around the country." By then end of their first year in competition, the team "competed in more than 100 races and compiled 53 wins."

At Saturn of Stuart, we utilized the Saturn Racing Team from 1996 until the disbanding of the team in 2002. Our community ran a weekend of racing consisting of a criterium and road racing. I would bring in one, sometimes two Saturn riders to participate in the event. Local cyclists enjoyed racing against the pros.

Some of the riders were Jeanne Golay, an olympic rider; Frank McCormick and many others. The Saturn representatives were always very accomodating and gracious in dealing with the racing community here in Stuart, Fl.

As a result of the connection with Saturn, we sponsored a junior racing team in conjunction with the local YMCA. Someone donated a trailer that was converted to a bike storage facility and with the YMCA's 16 passenger van, the coach was able to drive the race course at various locals around the state and tell the riders how to attack , lay back etc. it proved to be invaluable in helping the youngsters win many races. Some went on the be Jr. National Champions.

Hey, Bob Mionske was a coach on that team! He used to live here in Madison, and rode on one of the Olympic teams ('88, maybe?). He's now in the PNW (Seattle?), practicing law, esp. working on bicyclist issues. I got T-boned on my bike by a Crown Vic running a stop sign eight years ago. He gave me some good advice wrt how to deal with the guy's insurance company.

Dang, I wonder if there's a 1998 calendar anywhere; it's the same "layout" as 2009.
