97 sc2 296k When the engine is cold i can hear a rattle coming from the timing chain side of the engine. it sounds like the chain is slapping off the housing. i can't hear it at idle, only at shift points when i push the clutch in and when i let off the gas. Now for the weird part, when the engine is warmed up the noise goes away completely. I've changed the belt tensioner and idler pully already beacause they also were making noise. any ideas as to what this could be? don't timing chains make a constant noise when there worn out?

Almost 300,000 miles on the car and you're suspecting a timing chain? Although I wouldn't want to, I'd take the cam cover off and look before things go wrong.

Im in Canada so thats km's but still i took the cam cover off to check and the chain has a small amount of movement in it when i push on it. and now my cam cover leaks, time for a new gasket.

OK, 180k miles then? I couldn't begin to tell you what to do but noise is bad if its coming from the chain side, as others have found. Eventually the timing chain gets replaced along with the chain guides, etc..

Did you change the belt and if so what was the length of the new belt? I had a very similar problem. Changed out the belt tensioner without success. Changed the belt with limited success. Finally went to a new belt as suggested by this forum. Turns out the 778 length belt cured the problem. The 780 belt length is to long and causes the tensioner to hit the end stop.
Could be the chain though. 180K miles is getting up there.
