Default fall weather..means mileage drops........

after going through another start of the fall season i can now see the immediate drop in fuel savings as the cooler mornings are here.....

i wish there was a way to keep those batteries and hybrid system warm overnight...

i suspect an immediate %10 drop in mpg as fall sets in

Yeah, winter's a bummer on mileage. We'll see a 5-10% drop in the next month or two. Do you use a block heater? I've toyed with the idea, but it's my wife's car and she's probably not interested in yanking a plug out every morning.

Check your tires, too. I keep ours around 36-37 psi (cold), and found that all four were equally about 4 psi low the other day. It's that time of year.

A block heater seems to help, my temperature in B.C's. interior, is about the same as yours. My wife DID back out one time with cord in tow.

I've been told that part of the mileage drop off has to do with the fuel being reformulated for winter conditions. It has higher drying agents and more anti-gel to prevent winter temps from effecting it. These additives are said to reduce the octane rating. Anyone know for sure what the octane drops to in winter?

The octane rating should stay the same as posted on the pump ... it is only a rating of the fuels resistance to auto-ignition (spark knock). The energy content may drop with the more additives that are in the mix, but they don't post that value, but really should.
