Wrench 5spd Transmission Fluid Change - Fluid?

hey guys, wondering if I can put this into my 1996 SL1 5spd...

Mobil1 Synthetic ATF (DEXRON III/MERCON) GM 'H' Specification

I know it is technically Automatic Trans fluid, but I have heard of some of the T56 guys putting it in their transmissions as it is supposed to be way better than the regular GM stuff. Thats for a T56 though and i dont even know what brand the 5spd is in this thing lol

I have 6 bottles of this stuff!

Any help is appreciated!

Most people use it without issue. I find my transmission shifts a bit harder with it and takes a bit of work to get into 1st sometimes so I'm going to try Trans-Synd next

If you have it around it can't hurt to try... it takes 2.5 quarts I believe.

That will work fine. Mobil 1 universal ATF, exactly what you have.

I am running AMSOIL Torque-Drive, the other guys TransSynd. Shifts great! I highly recommend the stuff if you can stand the sticker shock.

15 min timer....

Casterol makes a TranSynd and a TranSynd HD. The TranSynd HD is probably too high of a viscosity for use in the Saturn manual transmission. Be sure you get the right one.

The AMSOIL is 45.00/gallon and only comes in gallons or larger. I do not have a price on the Casterol product but it will be close to that and might only be available in 5 gallons or larger. This stuff is for the over the road big trucks and they hold a lot of fluid. It is rated for 300,000 mile drain interval though.

I also put the Torque-Drive in the power steering.

Thanks.. theres an International dealer/parts/repair place I'm going to check out locally. Their prices for parts on my old powerstroke van were always reasonable. Hopefully they sell quarts. If not i could probably buy it out of the service dept pumped into my own container.

Some people report difference in shifting with new transmission fluid.

My manual tranny fluid was changed for the first time at 97k miles when a new clutch was put in and the transmission shop said they use only Synthetic transmission fluids.

My transmission shifted the same.....just the clutch grabs lower.

Couldn't hurt though....it will extend the life of the gearbox.

I was referring to TranSynd or Torque-Drive. They are close to 10.00/qt and the Torque-Drive is by the gallon and I suspect the TranSynd is also. This stuff works much better than the Mobil 1 or AMSOIL ATF

I'll second that some S-series don't seem to like Mobil1. I changed the fluid in both my ION & SL1, the ION's shift quality improved quite a bit especially in the winter, the SL1 not only was harder to shift, I noticed it leaked more than it had before. What I found that mine liked as Irving's Transflo, it a remarkable difference in the shift quality. I originally tried it on an older Ford I had because it was one of the few ATF's that met Ford's Type H spec. Here's a link; http://irvingoil.com/pr_business/pr_...o_Eng_0805.pdf

This link shows the gear ratios. They were made by GM. Specifically by Saturn. The 5-speeds take Dexron III ATF not gear oil. About 2.5 qts. Not sure what else to tell you.
