Default PCV Grommet and PCV valve

1) How often do you guys replace the grommet for the PCV valve?
2) What is the Saturn part number for the OEM PCV valve grommet?
3) Do you replace it every time you replace the PCV valve?
4) How often do you replace the PCV valve?
5) Is it okay to use aftermarket PCV Valve grommet or only use OEM?

These questions pertain to a 1997 SL2 with 166k miles. Last time the PCV valve was changed was 30k miles ago. PCV Valve grommet last change unknown (may even be original).

Thanks

Nope, never had to replace one.

When it gets clogged, but I pretty regularly clean it with carb cleaner so it doesn't get gummed up.

Should be fine.

I saw one of the Richpin's videos where he shows how to replace the PCV Valve and the grommet and thought the grommet replacement is essential.

The grommet is a generic part and if it gets cut or baked to a hard lump then you need a new one. They last a very long time and so does the PCV valve. Every other oil change take the PCV off and clean it out, it will be fine.

Throttle body/choke cleaner.
I new PCV valve cost as much as a can of good cleaner ($3.69 at Autozone)
and you don't have to worry about spraying in you face like I did

Search button is a wonderful tool Each question has been answered before. The PCV is the only part on the s-series that is supposed to rattle.

Carb cleaner or throttle body cleaner. Or for those that might be intimidated by a spray can and squirt themselves you can dunk the entire thing in just about any solvent and shake it briskly and let it drip dry. A coffee can half full of kerosene or diesel fuel works well , naptha also works also but its not good for you according to the sate of California.

Thanks for all the replies.

I bought a new PCV valve from Saturn even though the one in now was replaced with an OEM PCV valve about 30k miles ago. I'll take it out and see if it rattles when I shake it. If it does, I might clean it and re-install and use the new one for future use.

Take it out and clean it first and then it will rattle. The only thing in them that will fail is the spring, if it has one.

1999 SL1
Default Re: PCV Grommet and PCV valve

Sorry to revive an older thread, but I figured it was better than starting an entirely new one for something small... anyway...

Yesterday I recently damaged my (already marginal) PCV grommet on my '99 SL1 while replacing my PCV valve. I thought I'd have to go to the dealer and wait for them to order one, as there are other threads on here (albeit old ones) that say there isn't an aftermarket replacement.

So I checked Advance Auto Parts, and although they had nothing in their computer, I looked in the HELP! parts section on the shelf (generic miscellaneous parts, on little red carboard cards; manufactured by Motormite/Dorman) and found what appears to be an exact replacement.

The HELP! part number on the package is 42052. Advance also lists 5017610 on the receipt; I think this is their internal part number, so you might be able to call and ask if they have that in stoock. The part was $1.99.

It fit perfectly on my '99 SL1. I have no idea if earlier years or SL2s use the same grommet. The packaging lists the applications as "various GM models 1968 and up."

Hopefully someone eventually finds this useful! Thanks to everyone for all the great information & advice on this forum.
