A new feeditems entry has been added:

2009 Saturn Aura XR 4-Cylinder Test Drive Yields an Impressive 39 Highway MPG

Quote:
Automotive Addict's Harvey Schwartz spent some time behind the wheel of Saturn's new 2009 Aura XR, now available with GM's tried-and-true 2.4L 4-cylinder powerplant and 6-speed automatic transmission. Schwartz thinks the three are a winning "no compromises" combination, as he was able to record an incredible 39 mpg on the highway.

He must have started his test at the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 west of Denver and driven to St Louis Mo. About 900 miles downhill

Don't get too excited yet. The review says "you can get up to 39 mpg," it does not say that it has actually been done yet.

Exactly. The EPA estimates on the sticker give you a range for both city and highway mpg. It's the same as saying "it could get as low as 26 on the highway"--they're talking about the maximum.

It's the same tactic that our local Chevy dealer is using--posting the absolute highest number they could find on the sticker in HUGE numbers across the windshield. It's in no way an average.

Still, an average of 33 mpg highway for a mid-sizer ain't bad...

Interesting. Looks like the XR I4 has 17" wheels. That makes sense but does the XR 3.6 still have the 18" wheels or have they been decontented out?

Also I read "A single, 2in. round, chrome tipped exhaust outlet is found below the rear bumper." No dual exhaust? What differentiates the XE from the XR I4?

Why would a 4 cyl have dual exhaust? Just because it says XR doesn't mean it qualifies for dual exhaust as in this case, it wouldn't be relevant.

Why not? It has in previous two model years. The dual exhaust is one of the things that distinguished an XR from an XE.

Just to clarify:

I meant "why not" as in why not have dual exhaust in a 4 banger? Also, "it has in the last two model years" as in it has been qualified as an XR with having dual exhaust in the last two model years, not that the I4 ever had duals...

The 4-cyl XR loses not only the 18" wheels that remain standard on V6 XRs but also the V6 model's automatic climate control and fog lamps. None of those features can be had on a 4-cyl XR at any price. Lame. The 4-cyl Malibu LTZ at least retains the climate control and fog lamps. At least GM is giving a hefty price break; according to GM's Employee Offer Sale site, a 2009 4-cyl XR starts at $24,100. A 2008 V6 XR starts at $26,325, with the 2009 likely even higher.

Thanks for the info. So it looks like the only thing that distinguishes an XE from a 4-cyl XR is leather

Bah, who wants a 4 cyl Aura anyways?

There's nothing like pulling up next virtually any 6 cylinder car on the road and knowing you can win with your Aura.

Also, the Altima 2.5L 4 Cylinder has dual exhaust. Looks pretty cool, even though I would not buy one just because of the dual exhaust. The Aura is a better overall package.

Well, I decided to go to saturn.com and do the live chat thing. I hesitated to do this because it's hard to get a straight answer from them, from my experience.

I asked what is the difference between the 2009 Aura XE and the 2009 Aura XR 4cyl. After telling me a bunch of other stuff that I already knew (33 MPG, 4 cyl available on XR, stabilitrac etc.) they said that basically the only differences are leather and the advanced sound system which are not available on the XE. Bluetooth is standard on the XR but is an option on the XE. That's pretty much it.

Bluetooth is an option on the XE? Oh wow, I was under the impression it was standard across the board.

The base Aura still comes pretty well equipped now.

Sounds like the difference between an ION2 and an ION3. My father has a 2, what's different from a 3? He doesn't have fog lamps, nothing else is different.
