Default Saturn "Rethink MPG" Ad Airs During the Olympics

A new story entry has been added:

Saturn "Rethink MPG" Ad Airs During the Olympics

Quote:
General Motors has been a big sponsor of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games on NBC. There have been number of different GM ads being shown every night, including the critically-acclaimed 'Beautiful Blue' television spot, but tonight the company aired the 2009 version of Saturn's 'Rethink MPG' commercial just after the Men's 100m dash final.

Good! I'm glad Saturn got a commercial for the Olympics. They need as much advertising as they can get. I also think this commercial was well done. It seems to catch attention with the music and the "paper like" objects.

A little error in the article, it claims that the ad says that the aura gets 33 mpg, however, the ad merely claims 30 MPG highway. Why they chose to go with the 4-speed version instead of the 6-speed is probably because the 6-speed is 2009 model and that it would be bad for the Astra (the compact car in the lineup) to be shown in an ad with less highway MPG than the midsize car.

It's funny that all these different car companies are advertising 30 mpg ratings like it's something totally amazing, when pretty much every car in a given class is getting the same mileage!

Many cars had better mileage in the past, but the today's cars are faster, heavier, and safer.

i.e. The Vega got 37 mpg on the highway in the 70's...

The ReThink campaign makes me feel that the current company lacks direction.

Thank you for posting this. Perhaps I was too subtle when I wrote the story, but the text was from the "Olympic" 2009 version of the commercial, while the video is of the 2008 version. I think the only difference is the 30 vs. 33 highway MPG for the Aura.

Thanks again!
Charlie

If tested with the present norms of the EPA, what would it get however... IIRC, EPA tests were modified in the late 70s, early 80s to lower estimates, then again recently in 2008. However, you don't have to go that far back to see results like that, old Saturns, early 90s Civics and Tercels, first generation manual Neons all got pretty good highway fuel consumption. Go back to the 80s and pretty much every major company got cars that would get in the high 30s, sometimes more than 40, and some even 50, MPGs in the present tests: Civic HF, Chevy Sprint, Dodge Omni, Nissan Sentra, Ford Tempo, etc, etc... What they had in common was that they were light, small, had weak engines (less than 60 hp wasn't unheard of) and had often none of the options we can't even imagine a car without now (power steering, power brakes, airbags, etc...).

Now, basically no one wants these kinds of cars that were basically an engine, a transmission, a steering wheel and 4 wheels that's all.
