Unless it's just to test the engines and drivetrain, since it's the same platform. I found this from the link you provided very interesting:

As Lutz confirmed earlier this afternoon in an article, when the new Aura does arrive it will NOT be the Insignia clone that everyone assumed it would be. GM is planning on doing a revised exterior and a completely different interior design for the Saturn variant of the car. This is to differentate the car from the LaCrosse replacement and we assume to keep the car fresh.

Maybe it's ruse that the vehicle spotted is a Saturn Aura ... perhaps it's the new 2010 Buick LaCrosse in disguise?

My Saturn dealer is across the street from a Pontiac GMC dealer which is next door to a chevy dealer. All separate owners. I do not see this kind of merge as a good thing especially in practice as GM would have to pay someone in the process. Locally, from what I have seen, people who shop at the Saturn store would simply go up the street to the Honda or Toyota or Nissan store. All those makes are within a stone's throw.
