2001 LW200 While driving the car this am the bright light indicator started to flash. I checked to see if I had the headlights on they weren't, switched the bright switch back and forth still it continued to flash. A little smell of smoke from the steering colum area then a little visable smoke. Pulled over to the side of the road & pulled 2 10amp fuses out 1 for the left head lite & the other for the parking lights, I didn't notice at the time there is also a right head light fuse. Anyway the flashing bright indicator stopped flashing & no more smell or smoke. I never got a chance to see what the headlights were doing when this was going on. I suspect both DRL & the brights were on and causing an over load on the wiring.
Got home later on and put the fuses back in, bright indicator was again on when it shouldn't be. Shortly after that the indicator started to work as it is suppose to and all lights continues to be working.

No, the stalk switch probably just died. Common problem with the L's, easy half hour replacement and about $30 as I recall.

I've looked over the switch, no visable signs of having been over heated. The switch still works in all positions so I'm not sure that is the culprit & the unit now cost around $50. I've taken the top cover off of the steering colum to see when & if it happens again & possibly locate which circuit it is thats causing the trouble.

You won't see any charring on the exterior of the switch, but you will if you disassemble it. Just be ready to have your bright lights come on all by themselves when you are not in the car. It will drain your battery if you don't catch it in time. I wish I would have taken pictures of my old light switch/turn signal assembly before I tossed it out.
$50 is cheap to prevent being stranded somewhere with a dead battery.

As I was driving to Saturn for the part, the stalk switch started to smoke. There was no charring inside or outside that I could see. I replaced the switch & I now have the Flash to Pass feature which I don't think I've had in a very long time. There is a new part # so I'm hoping they've fixed the problem.
