Attention VUE Transmission Noise

2002 AWD V6 Vue. Whenever I let my foot off the gas (coast), and then apply the gas to accelerate I hear "clunk" noise, similar to the old sound of U-Joint clunking in rear wheel drive cars. Anyone else hear sounds like that with the VUE?

There is a TSB out for this. You need your axle nuts re-torqued.

My 2000 SW2 w/automatic does exactly the same thing. Does that mean my nuts are loose too?

I just got mine back from the dealer for this problem... They did do the TSB on re-torqueing the axle nuts (which gives the bearings a different preload, which I don't completely agree with, but if GM Chassis says it's OK, then it must be...). They also found that the rear transmission mount bolts were loose, therefore they re-tightened them.

The car is like a complete new car again. I had brought this problem to them at 4K and they couldn't duplicate it, but at 8K the thing was clunking at every gear change, making me nervous it was going to drop the tranny out on the ground sometime.

Hopefully you will have competent mechanics and will look over not just the TSB, but the rest of the mounts.

Good Luck,
Nass.

Mine would buck upon downshifting, if the roads were wet, it would cause the tires to break loose from the road... the final straw was it caused me to skid out of control going down the road once when I shifted... that's when I got it fixed.

Question

OhioVUEBoy, I thought you have a Manual VUE, right? So is this TSB thing applied to all powertrain across? CVT, Manual, Auto 5-speed?

No clunking from my SL 5-speed (S-series though). But in the Automatic SL2, I've got the similar experience of 'Clunking' occasionally too. During traffic while you're letting off the gas to slow down but suddenly want to pick up speed again (Half-way stomp on the gas!) The thing just makes a clunking noise and downshift harshly.... ;p

I won't consider this an issue (other Auto I drove did the same sound in similar situation), but for the TBS is it just a VUE-thing only?
