Default Flashback Friday: 1991 Saturn SL2 Road Test

There's a guy on YouTube that has uploaded tons of old car reviews/previews. Here is the link.

(I know it's not Friday, but I liked Charlie's "Flashback Friday" theme and I forgot to post this on Friday )

Nice blast from the past. Thanks for that. I always remeber a quote from one of the early road tests of the Saturns. I believe it was from Popular Mechanics, not sure. But it was a great quote..."all in all, an auspicious beginning for the upstart from Tennessee.

Thanks for the flashback Uzzy...I remember reading the review of the 1991 in Motor Trend and thinking...I can't believe I just bought this Oldsmobile, I should have waited one more year!

That was cool! More! More! I have a brochure from 1991, but that's the first video I've seen of the '91's. When I was stationed at NAS Lemoore, Saturn came to the base to introduce the '91's; I test drove a silver SC. Man that was cool! Loved Saturn ever since then, and not because they gave us free T-shirts. The ex and I almost bought a '91 SL2 in that deep, dark blue metallic with tan interior. Dang. Wish I had.

Here's a thingy about bumper testing, which has an SL2 in it briefly and the SL2 is in the top 5.

Remember before Saturn became an outlet for standard GM stuff and they had the cutaway cars in the showroom? You could see the energy absorbing structure underneath the bumper shell.

I never saw that at my Saturn dealer, but I wasn't in the showroom really at all in the S-series days, that I can recall. I hung out in the garage and wash bays exclusively back then.

The anti-anti-GM version:

Thank you for that, Saturn 69.

Unfortunately, its not as easy to create that type of display with metal bodied cars. Its also very expensive - many of the cars used for those displays were part of the first batch of recalled Saturns that had received bad Texaco coolant. As an alternative, Saturn stores are now installing overhead cameras that will display holographic-like images on cars in the showroom, effectively "peeling back" the metal skin and showing folks what's underneath. Similar displays have been featured at some recent auto shows and were well received. Its a cool way creating a cutaway car without actually destroying a car in the process, and they've got the technology to a point where you don't have to dim the lights to enjoy the show.

Stop, you're killing me!

Interesting: all five vehicles met or exceeded the EPA fuel economy ratings, with three of the vehicles achieving over 40 MPG. That was in 1992. Now we are more than 15 years later and how many non-hybrid gasoline powered cars are rated by the EPA at over 40 MPG...? On low octane gasoline...?

Yes, but look at the safety features and compare the wights of the cars. front driver's side Airbags and ABS were options and not often taken. Other airbags were essentially unheard of. Safety features weght down cars a lot. Also, we've had another horsepower wars since the early '90s. About 100HP is par for this field. I just went to GM.ca and compared the Astra to the Mazda3, Civic and Corrola. They all have 138HP, 156HP, 140HP and 126HP respectively. And all people do about the Astra is gripe abot how under powered it is. That is why the fuel economy is so low compared to days of old, I think.

Here's a flashback to the first Homecoming!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2SLeYKJmrs

Too bad the video quality is a bit shakey. But it's cool to see those shots of the S-series cars lined up ad far as the eye can see on the highway.

Being there would have been something special, and I know some members here now, were there.
Did any members here make it into the video?

Here ya go:

1993 Saturn S-Series SC2

1996 Saturn S-Series SC2

1994 Saturn S-Series SC 2This one is perfect; tan leather, 70K miles.

They're all on eBay so the listings won't stay forever. Pretty decent prices, very clean cars, kinda high miles. My '95 SC2 has 137.5K on it; still gets 34mpg, still gets compliments. The Saturn coupes from '91-02 are one of the best looking American coupes ever. The lines of the 2nd gen are the bets I've ever seen; what everyone calls the '3rd Gen', or as I call it the 2nd Gen refresh, are a bit clumsy design-wise, but not bad.

That's just sexy right there.
