Default AMP Taking Orders for Electric Sky Conversions

A new story entry has been added:

[drupal=2334]AMP Taking Orders for Electric Sky Conversions[/drupal]

Quote:
After one year development, an Ohio company is now taking orders to convert a gasoline-powered Saturn Skys to 100% electric power. The company, Advanced Mechanical Products (AMP), is replacing the combustion drivetrain with electric motors, safe lithium batteries, and proprietary control software. "The prototype is in the final stage, and production will take place later this year, with deliveries beginning in 2009," said Jack Kuntz, AMP CEO.

Sounds like a cool idea. But, and this is based on the rendered picture, I tend to wonder why they didn't put the battery pack in the previous location of the gas tank - in the trunk. It would seem that would have made too much sense. I also hope they envision turning some of that extra space under the hood into "trunk" space. Batteries take up a lot of space, but not that much.

charlie, have you seen the gas sports bike vs the electric. I think the gas ran a low low 7 in a 1/4 and the electric ran a mid 7 qrt. mile. Its good to see that we can still compete, but I got to tell you, I'm going to miss the raspy nasty sound of v8's. With the way things are going, since I'm young, one day gas will be just too much for us muscle car, and new muscle car (post 1970s) fans to continue what america was built on. Racing. Maybe not, who knows.

This is a pretty small company here in Cincinnati. If they do good on these conversions, they will make a pretty penny for themselves.

Here is a recent news report from WLWT-TV (Cincinnati NBC affiliate).

Apparently there will be 300 made, but only sold locally first before going National.

Each one will be $50K....$25K for the car, and $25K for the Electric Conversion.

150 miles off of one charge...that sounds pretty good to me.

Nice little video package on the WLWT website too:
