Saturn has Sharp Cars, Low Profile

Saturn's Matt Armstrong recently talked to the Detroit Free Press about the progress the brand is making with its revitalization efforts. "Just a year ago, the top three reasons peopled picked a Saturn were value, fuel economy and the price or monthly payment," he told the newspaper. "Now they are exterior styling, value and fuel economy. That shows that people appreciate our new products. They're coming in because of the products, not because of the payment."

No doubt the data is accurate in this article, but the interpretation is skewed. In many ways he sounds like a used car salesman.

What he feels has been good for Saturn, I and many others feel it's been catastrophic for Saturn. Saturn dealers seem to be more desperate to make money than satisfy the customer than they were 5 years ago. The legendary customer service hasn't won any recognition in many years. The dealers seem to be doing the same nasty sales and service practices the other car makers are doing.

He brags and feels that a 15% drop in sales is a good thing since they are moving more upscale and the owners earn a higher income... The Outlook is responsible for raising the median sale prices for Saturn. While the Outlook's MSRP is $1500 less, you can still buy an equivalent Acadia for the same or less money because they reduce the MSRP and also has incentives. This is one of the reasons the Acadia is the best selling Lambda. What concerns me is Outlook sales continue to drop as Acadia and Enclave sales are increasing. IMO the Traverse will cut the Acadia and Outlook sales in half.

The 08 VUE was released $3-4k higher than it's predecessor and it's sales were poor until Saturn applied massive sales incentives making it once again of the most affordable SUV's available. Going upscale with the VUE hasn't worked.

The Astra sales has been lackluster and they already started throwing money incentives at it to try and boost it's sales. Saturn knows if this business model doesn't fly their plans for the future are doomed. IMO the declining value of the dollar has already doomed any hope of successfully selling Opels in the US.

Plan B is to continue to sell re-badged GM vehicles.

The Insignia is a nice looking body and will help make the Aura unique to it's almost identical sister the Malibu. I just hope they learned the 08 VUE and don't price it higher than the Aura currently is. The BMW styling cues look good, but if they price it higher, one might as well go out and buy a real BMW.

The new two-mode and plug in hybrids will be the most significant move Saturn will make during it's realignment in the car industry.

LOL. If Saturn could sell just 1 car per year, for a one million dollars, to someone who makes a million dollars a year. Just imagine what a success Saturn would be!

Skewed is an understatement.
