Default Consumer Reports Gives Astra 'Very Good' Rating

A new story entry has been added:

Consumer Reports Gives Astra 'Very Good' Rating

Quote:
CR road tested the Volkswagen Rabbit S, Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, Toyota Matrix S, Saturn Astra XE, Mini Cooper Clubman, and Scion xD in the June 2008 issue of its magazine. According to their testers, the vehicles were ranked in the order above with the 5-door Astra coming in fourth place. Nonetheless, the compact Saturn hatchback was rated "very good" for how well it performed.

They must be off their meds. That or they reasoned that giving it a good rating wouldn't be in violation of their standards since it is made in Belgium and therefor not an American-made car.

I guess since it's not American made they can rate it "very good" however since it's still a GM they can't recommend it. What a joke. Why do people continue to read the automotive section of this rag.

Does anyone else find it a bit unfair that they tested the XE5 and not the XR3 or XR5. With the exception of the Rabbit all the vehicles that they "recommend" have a MSRP above the XE3.

They can't recommend it because it's brand spankin' new. They require one year worth of reliability data showing average or better reliability before they can recommend a model.

That's not true. CR does give new cars recommended ratings. They love the Asian makes and will usually give them a recommended even on a completely new, both mechanical and design, platform though the only thing that carries over is the name. Until recently, I believe the Camry was the recipient of such generosity. I don't think they did it this year for the Camry due to Toyota's quality issues of late.

Besides, the Astra doesn't fit the "new" criteria very well anyway since it is a well established model in Europe. Quality and reliability ratings there have been quite good.

Consumer reports is probably the most boring, and at times stupid reading I've come across, especially their road tests. In their favor, there tests are the most objective you will find.

They buy everything they test from retailers using a straw buyer so neither the seller or the manufacturer knows that the item sold was going to be tested. I'm not sure how they dispose of the vehicles they test - my guess is through an auction.

The road tests are a composite of a number of testers conducted under real-world conditions. They compare what they think are going to be models/options/packages that is representative of what many buyers purchase.

In the case of the Astra, they feel that more people will buy the XE than the XR. I was puzzled at the particular option package, though and the price. It seems that the XR would have more goodies and end up with a similar price at the end.

The General needs to heed this report - especially the comments about the automatic transmission. It's a recurring theme. The 5 speed is a much livelier car.

Actually, consumer reports is discontinuing that practice. They used to automatically assume reliability for Toyota and Honda. However, after a recent incident in which a Toyota turned out not so great at reliability (Camry V6, I believe), they are requiring a year of reliability data before recommending a vehicle for all makes. Notice that their most recent report that included the Astra review did NOT recommend the redesigned Matrix since it was new for this year.

Yes, the astra has done quite well in europe, but consumer reports relies on their owner survey for having a uniform standard of reliability.

They did the same with large pickup trucks, by automatically assuming good reliability for the new Toyota Tundra and saying "new model, no data" for the equally new Chevrolet Silverado. They were bitten by that one, too, when the Tundra ended up with several reliability issues not found on the Chevy. It was a bit fun to watch CR eat crow on that one.
