I understand the theory... There is a line going from the master cylinder to a weird cylindrical object, then to the slave cylinder- what is the (metal) object and what is its function?
Also, Haynes book describes bleeding the system, but mine has no bleeder screw. I can't imagine that leaving the same fluid in there for years is a good idea! ![]()

Clutch hyd fluid is the most "static" fluid system in the car. It never has to absorb heat the way engine oil, tranny fluid or even brake fluid does, it's not constantly pumped, and it doesn't bathe moving parts like gears. So it can remain stable for a very long time.

will a clutch hydraulic system from a 96 saturn (both s-series) work on a 2000 manual transmission?

You have to change the clutch hydraulics and the clutch kit (pressure plate, friction disc) at the same time. Then it will work. You can't just replace one or the other with second gen parts.

i have the pressure plate, friction disk, and the hydraulics from the 96. so if i have all of that it should work with 2000 and up?

The only difference in the hydraulics is the reservoir location. There may be a difference in the slave pushrod length, measure it to find out. The clutch assemblies will swap and function. Flywheels are the same except for the center recess diameter in the 96 and older is slightly smaller diameter and will require chamfering to clear the later clutch disk center.
