1994 SC2
1992 SL2
Wrench 1992 SL2 Performance Ideas Needed

I just bought a 1992 Saturn SL2 that I am making into a race car. I am looking for any and all suggestions on how to make this car go F-A-S-T FAST! I am going to put a cold air intake on it. It has a brand new coil pack and plug wires. I am also going to do a MMO soak then change the oil. I am going to put Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 and a Motorcraft FL-400S Filter on it. (If any of this is wrong, please tell me. ) Other than putting brand new tires on the aluminum rims, stripping it, putting a cage, belts, etc. it it. I am at a loss of what else I can do. Anyone who can help me I will greatly appreciate it. ***NOTE*** The track does NOT allow turbos to be put on, but pretty much everything else is allowed. THANKS!

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Stickers, coffee can muffler, and deep tinted windows should give you another 100 horse at least.

Default Re: 1992 SL2 Performance Ideas Needed

With all respect.. It's a 16 yr old SATURN, not a "race car". I'd have serious concens for personal safety even with a cage. I've never looked a crash data on Sats but it IS mostly plastic. If that's not the issue.. better load up the money truck real full!

...
1997 - SL2, barebones, 161k, Auto - Rebuild complete and.. burnt a valve 20k later Arrgh!
Purchased 114k 10/07
Added OEM CC

it's amazing what some people believe...

AGAIN:

ONLY THE OUTER SKIN IS PLASTIC!!! NOTHING STRUCTURAL!

saturns are THE safest small cars (ever) built! the frame is a very rigid, very safe, structural cage. the roofs don't even collapse in a rollover. maybe you SHOULD look at crash data before you go shooting off like that.
many people have run saturns on dirt tracks; people will race anything.

Sorry, I don't want to sidetrack a thread or start a flame war but, I drive a 24 yr old German car in the summer. My Sat adventure was a hurried replacement (on a whim) for my truck that my son wrecked just before the snow flew.. That being said.. I find the Saturn an amazing car. It's fun work on and has (so far) met most of my expectations aside from burning oil. I think that alone is MAJOR flaw unfortuantely.

I would never expect it (or even attempt) to hit performance/speeds that I can do without a second thought with the other car.

To reinterate.. It is NOT a sports car.. I know, as I drive one.

i would use later yr pistons with the flat faced valves with some shavings of block and head to get around 10 cr or abit more. A good rebuilt with attention to tolerances etc etc. and over bore it!

...
now with problems and getting a newer car but not a saturn :(
My 95 SL2 white top of the line car Priceless..

Use 1991-1993 design pistons. 1994+ are garbage. Especially if you're going with any forced induction.

EXCUSE ME? I took my STOCK thats righ STOCK 1994 Saturn SC2 out for test drive. My buddy was in an earlier style Cavalier with a CAI, and a 3.1L V6. We lined up, took off. He got me off the line then about 2nd gear I blew him off the road reaching 110 in about a mile leaving him far far behind. TO REINFORCE MY SURPRISE HERE This car burns tons of oil, has over 215,000 miles, and is an Automatic. Not a sports car? Haha I am building the 1992 SL2 5-speed. It should do even better. It has the exhaust manifold on it. Maybe you should clean your EGR vavle and intake manifold and try again bub.

rebuild the engine...
bore it...
raise the comp...
cyl head...
full exhaust...
motor mounts...
clutch....
new wheel bearings...
new brakes (rotors, pads and all)...
5spd tranny...
TB...

that should make it a little quicker
