I used this DIY instructions, i know it's not Saturn but they're almost the same. But its under the the car on the driver side. You will need an allen wrench to take the drain off. Then to fill it its on top

maybe im looking in the wrong spot. I know where the drain plug is for the oil. Can you direct me from around that area I should be looking? Another forum said to take the driverside tire off and the plug should be in that area.

So now we get closer. Do you know which trans the car has?
If you have the four door coupe you may have the VTI. If you have the four door sedan then you have a trans that does not have a drain plug.
The trans with no drain plug has a flat L shaped pan on the bottom of the trans.

A warning for you if you have the VTI trans. Unless you have a scan tool that will tell you the trans temp then you can't properly get the right fluid fill level.

The sedan never came with the VTI.
The sedan is the one with the normal four doors. The coupe is the one with the two normal front doors and the two smaller rear opening rear doors.
The VTI does take a special refill porceedure that while not difficult does mean the you need to know the transmission temp for the final top up.

My mistake on the auto trans for the IONs. Looks like you have the AF-23 five speed not the GM four speed with the flat L shaped pan if you have the sedan. It wasn't untill 2005 that they used the 4T-40E GM trans.
So with the sedan then you have the AF-23. This trans does have a drain plug on it. It is a sideways facing one that faces to the engine. It will be the same as the one in this picture.

The fluid level and fill is done by the fairly well hidden and bolted down dipstick

Thanks for the pic. So how would I check the temp? Do autoparts tool rentals have them?

You only need to know the trans temp when you have the VTI. If you have the sedan with the AF-23 the trans needs to be at operating temp. You check the fluid level with the dipstick.
So do the fluid change, get the fluid so that it is on the dipstick in the cold area. Go for a drive and then recheck the fluid level.

The drain is a big flat hex head looking bolt under the car on the drivers side of the transmission. Its a little smaller than your thumb. You drain it and put in another 4 quarts of fluid for a drain refill. If you have a Asian tranmission use toyota fluid purchased from toyota.
