Default Radar Detector Location???

Alright....I hard wired my radar detector today (I'll have a "How To" write up to post soon too), but now I'm second guessing the location.

I like it centered on the windshield & low, and that's where I have it. BUT it hovers right above the sensor for the headlights.

I'm sure it wouldn't make a difference on a real sunny day, but the sun was going down after I finished (around 7pm) and the headlights came on early because of the shadow from the radar detector.

I don't see how/where it could go (high) by the rear view mirror...there just isn't room.
I know I could put it under the rear view mirror (centered) possibly, but then it'd be too low & I don't wanna get pulled over for "obstruction of view" or something dumb.

And I know I could put it in the driver's corner or something, but then the sensor for the back (behind me) wouldn't work too good.

Any other ideas, or just leave it???

That mount is extremely low in my opinion. The higher you mount it the better range the radar has. I have not set one up in the aura just yet, but when I do I will put it up towards the roof just to the left of the rear view mirror.

Where did you hook up the power? I think you can easily get an invisicord and connect it to the rear view mirror for power. I might go that route. Does this car have an accessory power port?

Mount low for better Laser detection.

Mount high for better Radar detection. (X,K,KA)

I mount mine high because, the cops use Radar alot more than Laser.

Just my opinion, but what do I know. I've only been using radar detectors (Escorts/Pasports) for 23+ years, lol!

I put my Escort up above the rear view mirror to the left. Still has an open view rearward. Looks good, works good.

Mounting low does cut the radar range. Escort suggests mounting high as long as you aren't behind a shade band.

The Higher you mount, the better the radar can pick up X,K,KA bands. Senerio - coming up to a small hill (w/ Mr. Officer sitting on the other side), which mounting site do you think will pick up the signal first? Yep, you got it.

I mounted my Bel high on the windshield in the upper left corner (driver's side) where your dealer usually likes to put the next service windshield tag. I ran the power cord up the "A" pillar behind the cover (it pops off pretty easily) and ran it to an auxillary power socket that I hid underneath the dash. I tapped into the existing power socket by pulling off the panel on the right side of the center console. Laser is pretty rare so I'm not too worried about the rear pick-up being obstructed by my fat head. I mostly deal with x band for NJ State Police and K band for PA.

I got a bunch of pics that I'm gonna post (for a HOW TO write up), but I used a (fused) "Add-A-Circuit" in the fuse box in the passenger footwell.

I used the "Sunroof/Heated Seat" fuse (turns on with the car & then shuts off when you open the driver's door) for the power. Even if you don't have a Sunroof or Heated Seats, you should still have that fuse and you'll be able to use it for power.

Ran the wire behind the glove box & then up the passenger a pillar side & then under the dash trim panel....pretty simple actually

Concerning the location....

I understand you might want it mounted high for better sensing, but I also don't want it to be totally noticable.

I personally can't stand it when people have it right in the middle of the windshield (height wise)

You could get pulled over for something dumb like obstruction of view since it's in the middle of your windshield (if that high)

And also then you're making it easy to spot out to see.....for potential thieves. I like to keep mine on the "down low", lol

Maybe I'll just move it up a little higher though

It looks good where ya got it. I would keep it there. You've already hard wired it for the low position.

That is interesting that you mention theft. I can see detectors much more easily mounted low than high. Fortunately, I think radar detectors have become much less of a theft item than they once were. I guess the GPS systems are the new hot theft item.

That add a fuse sounds great, cant wait to see the details on it. I have a valentine 1 that I swear by, because its saved my a** quite a few times!

I have it in my other car mounted high, basically in the sunshade part and it still detects without error. and its next to impossible to see. To me, if the radar detects laser, its already too late!

As far as theft, you can just unplug it and pull it off the windshield. The aura has a nice big center compartment to keep it in to. I usually don't even bother because its actually that hard to notice, but I would probably put it away with the Aura. I was planning on running the power cord in the roof and down the passenger side pillar.

in my old buick, i had a radar detector, i forget what kind, i'd have to look since i took it out. I think it was a bell or something. But it was cool, you mount the actual unit below the dash or against the console or something and then run the wires up the side pillars and into the roof and then the wires come out by the rearview mirror and connect to this little sensor that suctions cups to the window. This way the only thing on the window is the sensor and not the whole unit.. I loved it..

Yeah, but there's still a little slack left in the wiring to move it around a little

I'm undecided.....it was raining out & a little cloudy, but wasn't THAT dark & the auto headlights came on

Don't know how much of a problem it'll be in the future

True, but on everyday occasions I leave it up there all the time.

The car is garaged at night anyways

But if I take it to the dealer or had to leave it somewhere for a couple days, then yeah I'd take it down

I take mine down every single time. The Florida sun is brutal. I have an Escort and it just clips right off (the suction cups stay on the windshield)

Same thing here....there is a bracket with 2 suction cups that sticks to the window

Unplug the cord & then press a release button & it slides right off that bracket

But like I said.....not gonna go thru that everyday

Oh well....like I said, I'll play with the location more tomorrow or something
