Default HELP!!! 2002 Saturn SL2 Dash Light Out

I have a 2002 Saturn SL2 and the dash light went out, well only half at least.
The MPH meter went out and the GAS meter went out.

I recently removed the dash board to run a wire to hook up a radar detector.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be great.
Thanks.

Not sure about the dash lights, but I would fix the SES light and add some coolant.

Get the SES code first along with checking your coolant level.

It looks like the bulbs are out on the left side. But for them all to go out at once...i wanna say a bad connection. I did read where theres a thin ground wire that acts like a fuse.

Could be a loose wire. Go to www.differentracing.com. They have a tech section that has detailed instructions on removing the upper dash portion for a radio install. It's not much more to getin behind the instrument cluster. My odometer back light was intermittant for a while, but I think it's worked steady now for about a year.

Ok, for clarification, the reason why the SES, Seat Belt, and the Coolant lights are on is because I just started my car.

The Dash pretty much snaps apart. You don't even have to remove the top dash pad to get the cluster out. The black plastic bezel that surrounds it and the radio can just be gently pried out around the edges. It also snaps into the left side dash vent by the door. Make sure to unplug the dimmer and/or fog light switch. Adjust the steering column all the way down to let it clear. The cluster is held in with 2 7mm screws near at the top corners. There is one electrical connector for it, behind the speedo. If you pull the cardboard insulator off you can access the bulbs. They're only available at the dealer so far as I know. Hopefully this can help you out.

The dash pad isn't very hard to remove. There are two small bolts above the pass. airbag that have to be removed, then just lift it up to disengage the clips holding it in place.

Then just remove the two 7mm bolts holding the cluster in place. Try switching a known good bulb with one on the dead side and see if it works. If so, just replace the bulbs. I'd go ahead and replace all of the backlight bulbs and the two spot light bulbs while you're in there.

LOL @ MPH meter.

It doesn't have to be removed out of the car, but does have to be unbolted. And just be sure to be careful when prying the dash bezel around the steering column. I've never taken the steering column plastic off.

Yup 02 is a third gen, just take the dash pad off by removing the two bolts and you can reach in behind the cluster and replace the bulbs.

Very easy job.

Do you think it might be a damaged wire?
Remember this happened right after I removed my dash to run my radar detector wire.
Is there one wire that gives power to the lights or two.
If there is one, I know that the wire is good because half of the lights are lit, but if there is two then we could assume the wire that gives power to the left lights is damaged.
Does anyone know the color of the wire that gives power to the lights?

Have you pulled the IP out yet?
If so, pull out the individual bulbs & test them for continuity with a tester of the electrical variety.
I have found that these bulbs will go out quite easily, especially whenever I had done any wire work in the dash area.
The good news is that on the 3rd generation S-Series Saturns is that the Odometer info is stored in the BCM, so if you need to pick up a used IP at your local junk yard or eBay & it will still have the proper milage reading for your car.

I have also found with what the dealer would charge for new bulbs, I was able to get a complete used IP on ebay, so It's nice to have a spare.

Hope this helps.

Rick
