Default Windshield wipers failing?

Hey guys. OK since the outllok has come out we've had our fair share of snow storms up here in the lovely stat of taxachusetts. And almost eveyr outlook we have sold has some back with a problem of the wipers not functioning, at all.

I tracked this down to the Nut on the wiper motor that holds the transmission to the motor, coming loose and falling off. As of yet there has been no bulletin released for this, though i have made people at GM aware of the issue, which i think is limited to areas with snowfall and people who do not feel the need to clean off their windsheilds beforein turning their wipers on.

Just seeing if this has happened to anyone else, and as a notice to people that ti hasnt happened to yet to keep your eyes out for it.

Thats a deal breaker for me, unless there is a recall made I will NOT look at buying an Outlook this fall. I live in an area that gets alot of snow and ice and can't risk GM not doing anything about this issue. Wipers are a safety device, not an accessory.

if you clean the snow off the windshield before you turn them on then you should have no problem. every person i ask whos had this problem said they didnt clear it all off.

And all it really takes is tightening the nut a bit more, ive yet to have one come back for it again.

On the older Saturns, the wiper arm had a nut that would loosen if too much force was applied to the wiper arm by the motor. A situation such as too much snow or the wiper arm frozen (ice) to the windshield not allowing the arm to move. The nut would loosen thereby keeping the motor from "burning" up. A simple tightening of the nut would get the arm back to work.

I wonder if the same idea was applied in this situation. Sort of like a shear pin that sacrifices itself to save the motor.

Would you buy a car where there is a known issue with the wipers and nothing was being done about it? It is quite common for ice and snow to build on the windshield here while driving. This is a safety issue that should be addressed by GM, if not by the NHTSA.

I think they are talking about alot of heavy snow on the windshield, not while driving. Then if you get ice buildup you can just use the heated windshield fluid.

yes im talking heavy snow, not stuff you would get from driving on the highway.

and yes it is acting like the older ones and loosening up, however i cant see why they would make that nut the one ot loosen up when they could just do what everyone else does and make the ones on the wiper arms themselves loosen up, that way ya dont have to take the whole cowl apart to fix it.

This happened to my wife and kid in northern indiana while driving in snow and sleet. The wipers stopped working and they were stranded on a rural courntry road. The car had 2000 miles and she tried to call onstar, which they would not help. She called me, I called the dealership, and they gave me a saturn motorist assists number.
We had to have the car towed to the local dealership 60 miles away to fix a screw that backed off the motor on the wipers.

At 13,000 miles, no problems with the wipers yet.

Had the same issue while driving. VERY dangerous. The tech explained that it is due to the "deep cowl" under the wipers. BS. They should have torqued the nut properly at the factory.

Question Re: Windshield wipers failing?

Glad I found this thread. Our wipers started acting funny this year and are now plain failing, and we've had the "under heavy snow & ice loads" recall done on it already. Sounds like this nut issue could be what we're looking at.

Question though:
To anybody that's had this happen, have you flipped the wipers out from the glass (like when you're changing them) and ran them? Did the same thing happen? It does for me, so that makes me question whether it could be the actual motor that needs replacement - at a dealer cost of $250 for the whole shootin' match.

To be clear, here's what's happening w/ my wipers when you use the "mist" feature, in order of the number of times you hit "mist":
  1. Wipers go up to about 80% of full range, halt
  2. Wipers move a smidgen further, halt
  3. still further, halt
  4. might complete upward motion, go about 60% of range back down
  5. halt
  6. halt
  7. halt
  8. halt
  9. finally hit bottom
Give or take a few... Seem like this nut could be the issue? or am I more likely looking at a motor replacement?

thanks in advance for your replies!

There was a recall on this, at least in Canada - I remember receiving this one in the mail:

Wrench Re: Windshield wipers failing?

K so I bit the bullet and ordered the wiper motor from Napa. picked it up the other day.

Tonight I got around to installing it. This is only AFTER I had to call my local dealership (awesome people) and they offered to pop off the wipers since it was seemingly impossible. Turns out, like so many other things, they have a "special tool" they use to get them off.
Anyway after that was done I started in on the motor replacement. I got the motor and linkage assembly out, took the motor off, and put the new one on. To my dismay, no improvement. I then took the linkage back off, and noticed that one side would rotate no problem for me while it was off, the other side wouldn't budge. I couldn't even rotate it with a HAMMER. That must be the problem.
I was informed by my dealership's service manager that when they did the "heavy snow & ice loads" TSB a few years back, it was the linkage assembly, not the motor, that was replaced. Anybody else think I might have a claim to get this repaired free of charge?
My fear at this point is that I did notice that the new motor was a bit quicker than the old one - so I fear the old one's been burnt up by having to work its ass off to turn the gummed up linkage. I wonder if they'd take care of that as a break due to a failure of a recalled part.

Any suggestions on how I should move forward?

Also, if anybody's interested in doing this procedure themselves I'd be happy to post the few pix I took w/ my cell phone w/ some instruction. Let me know if you're interested
