Default Weird & Scary Happenings

This weekend I took my daughter on an 800 mile college road trip. Everything was great until the last 100 miles. We stopped to fill the tank up and headed back onto the highway when we realized that none of my gages were moving. They were all stuck at the position they're in when the car is off. Luckily the computer still worked and I could see what speed I was set at by using cruise control and my little Ipaq GPS unit. I pulled to the side of the road and called OnStar but when they ran diagnostics it showed nothing out of the ordinary. I then drove a bit further and went to a rest stop just to be sure my lights were working since it was pouring down rain. Since the lights were working and everything else seemed to be fine we decided to try to make it home. All was good until about 20 miles from home when all of my dash lights seemed to dim. They never regained full brightness, but were still fine to see by so I made it home safely.

After about 20 minutes in the garage I went out to see where I stood and the gages seemed to be working again, but the lights were still a bit on the dim side, though I did see them a full brightness and then they quickly returned to the dimmer state. We also noticed a high pitched hum coming from the engine compartment.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be? I know I'll have to take it into the dealership, but seeing as I don't have time to do that until at least Thursday I'm wondering if the car is safe to drive or if I'll need to juggle some things?

Thoughts???

I'm surprised that the Onstar diagnostics didn't pull anything unusual. I'm not familiar with how the system works on the Outlook, but I do know on my other car, anytime something is problematic I can run a diagnostics and get a trouble code, I then have something to go off of for troubleshooting the issue. Hopefully this will turn out to be something easy...good luck and keep us posted. :-)

Sounds like my problem - it turned out to be water in the main fuse box - it has been replaced, and the leak(under the windshield) has been fixed. I pick it up early in the week. It took the dealership a week to find and repair the problem. They found 39 codes when it was hooked up to the computer! At one time, the gauges, the signal lights, the windows and even Onstar were all kaput! The only thing not affected was the engine. If your signals go out, get it to the dealer ASAP!Good luck with yours!

IM not sure how indepth onstar will go when you ask them to check your car. They are mainly concerned with emmissions related components and problems with the ECM/TCM or PCM. The dash lights not functioning is a problem with the Body Control module and they may not scan that with onstar diagnostics. That could be why they told you everything was fine.

Thanks! I thought it might be water related too as we started out in torrential downpours in Nashville and drove through on/off rain the rest of the day. It was pouring at the time that we got gas and we had just had the car sitting in a parking lot for an hour as we ate. Once we got home and let it sit for a short time it started working again. It's been fine since... even sitting in several downpours over the last two days... I'm baffled but haven't had time to take it in to have it checked out.
