All GM except for the t-bird that was given to me. New head gasket and its been the only ford I don't mind working on. But then again it is 25 years old and mint!

Nothing. We took the bus till I got the Saturn, then my license three months or so later.

How I endured ~21.75 years on a bus line is beyond me...

My grandparents bought their first brand new Saturn in 1991, and I fell in love with it! It was then I decided I wanted one. I was 14! I read everything I could about those cars, consumer reports, etc. So... when I moved out of my parents' home in 1996 and got my own place and a job, I was thrilled when my father called to tell me he was on his way to an auction to bid on a car for me! He told me I would love the one he picked. I was less than thrilled when a few hours later he showed up to deliver me my first vehicle... a 1962 Chevy II Nova sedan, light blue, with 192 measly cubic inches of in-line straight-6 cylinder engine! I hated it. H A T E D it. Eventually it grew on me though, and even though I bought my first (used) Saturn (96 SC2, purple!) in 2000, my Chevy still sits in my driveway awaiting the day that I finally have enough money to make her pretty again.

That little car earned my utmost respect when I drove her on our move from Tacoma, WA to southern Oregon. Halfway down the I-5 she lost power and began to die, so we pulled off the freeway and turned her off. My father was driving in front of me and pulled over too. I knew nothing about cars back then, so thank goodness he was there. When we lifted the hood, we didn't even need a flash light... the entire exhaust manifold was literally GLOWING RED. We sat there on the road what seemed like forever waiting for the engine to cool enough for Dad to do anything with it. In the end, he figured out that the distributor pin had sheared off. He rigged it up with a screw or nail or something and got the car going again. She ran just perfect the rest of the way to my new home in Oregon, and still runs to this day. Who knows how many miles are on her, she has her original engine... Dad said there was no telling if the odometer was right or if in the car's life it had turned over a couple of times... or a few times!

Anyway, that's my first car story. Today I own two Saturns and of course my little Chevy II. Sometimes I swear that Chevy is glaring at me as I pull out the driveway in my shiny Saturn coupe to go to work...LOL!!!

Default Re: Before you bought your first Saturn, did you own an import or domestic vehicle?

My parents use to have a new 86 mustang but they sold it a few years later. I guess a hatchback with no A/C and a new baby isnt a good combination.
When they sold that they bought a 1991 Chevy Lumina which was alright, it was a 3.4 V6 DOHC with 210hp/215 torque. The gas tank was rusted out by 1998 and everything got f***ed up after that.

They then leased a 2000 Ford Windstar which wasn't too bad. After that lease was up they bought the 2002 Galant which hasn't had one problem, and is still running perfectly at 91,000 miles.

My dad was driving a 1979 Ford F-100 since the day i was born and just got rid of it a few years ago. It was a manual which was nice but the transmission was f***ed, well it was 28 years old when he got rid of it.

He then bought a 1999 Mazda 626 which had soooooooo many problems, tranny, pcm,SES wont go off, and whenever it rained there was a puddle by the passengers feet. On the other hand it was fully loaded with a BOSE Stereo, but that didnt help.

They then traded that in and bought the 2007 Camry and i then got my SL2 last year:. Out of the three i like the SL2 the most

...
2002 Mitsubishi Galant 2.4, 94,500 miles
2007 Toyota Camry 2.4, 29,600 miles
1999 Saturn SL2 1.9, 93,700 miles

1986 Dodge Caravan (PoS)
1995 Ford Aerostar XLT (First true car)
1988 Honda Accord LXi (Bought to learn how to work on cars)
1987 Honda Accord DX (Demo Car)
2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE (First car on Payment)
1992 Ford Aerostar XLT (Free, parted)
1998 Saturn SL1** (First Saturn)
1994 Ford Aerostar XL (Extended version, needed it to haul)
1994 Ford Aerostar XL (Replaced the above when above exploded)
1980 Buick Regal (What the hell was I thinking??)
1992 Chevy Blazer (Traded a friend a laptop for this, sold for below)
1992 Saturn SL1** (Second Saturn)
1992 Saturn SL2** (Third Saturn)
1993 Mercury Tracer Wagon* (Long story, read below)
1987 Jeep Cherokee (Wanted to try 4x4ing)
1995 Saturn SL2** (I loved this Saturn the most)
1997 Saturn SL2** (Bought to replace 1995)
1992 Buick Century (See below)
1990 Subaru Legacy (Wanted an AWD to play with)
1989 Ford Escort Wagon (Free, ran and drove, fixed and sold)
1993 Ford Taurus Wagon (Demo again)
1993 Ford Escort Hatchback (Free, sold as well)
1981 Buick Century (Bought from a friend and fixed up, then sold)
1995 Pontiac Grand Prix (Bought, fixed and gave to dad)
1994 Mercury Sable (Traded for current Saturn)

**1998 Saturn SL1: This was my first Saturn, I bought it for $350 from my neighbor when my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE died. I didn't know about this site, and I didn't know Saturns ate oil like they do, and it was hard to start, so I traded it for the 1994 Ford, for hauling as I was scapping and I needed a junk van at the time. It had 198,000 when I sold it.

**1992 Saturn SL1: I bought this from a friend after learning of Saturns nature, and how neat they really are. I had it for a good while before my best friend called me looking for a car, so I had a friend selling that 1993 Mercury Tracer wagon, so we took my saturn down to Ohio to look at the Tracer, and we found out it was stick, and he can't drive stick, so I sold my Saturn to him regretfully, but it made him happy and the tracer was in nice shape. I drove the Tracer for over a year before I got rid of it.

1992 Saturn SL2: I bought it cheap and just resold it. It needed a transmission, and a timing set. It was just a trade in from someone for a newer car at a little dealer a friend owns. He let me take it for almost nothing. I sold it for $600

1995 Saturn SL2: I found a good deal on this on craigslist, they thought the head was blown cause of the oil burning, so I got it for 500 bucks and it ran and drove great. I drove it around for a few months before one sad night, I discovered that the diff pin was going to fail, so I replaced the transmission twice, and both doner units failed, so I got rid of it...

1997 Saturn SL2: I found this on Craigslist, and bought it to replace the 1995, I kept it for awhile, then a friend offered me something around the time I started to get sick, and I needed an auto, so I traded it for the 1993 Buick Century, which only had 36K original miles. It was reliable as they come, rode like a brand new car. I have a lot of bad memories with this car, and 100's of visits to the hospital, so I got rid of it just because anytime I drove it, it kind of made me depressed... Strange I know, but what I went though, yeah.

Months Pass.

1998 Saturn SL2 (Unlisted above): I got a Mercury Sable in trade for the 1981 Buick Wagon, so I ended up traded it for the Sable, since I know I could get more for the sable, which I did. I took the cash I got for it, waited my time, and found an Ad on Craigslist for a 1998 Saturn SL2 with transmission issues. I went and looked at it, the guy wanted $1000 for it, because of the low miles, I argued it down and walked away with the car for $850. I had to put a transmission in it and around $600 of parts, no labor as I did all the work. It works perfectly now, and has 84,000 miles. I drove it 900 miles yesterday with no issues!

I'm not trading this one, I'm not selling this one, I am keeping it.

Come summer, I'm going to start buying old Saturns and parting them out, and selling the parts to people who need them. There are a lot around here just sitting, dead. If it's unfixable or not worth fixing, I'm going to part them out totally and store and sell what can be re-used.

Default Re: Before you bought your first Saturn, did you own an import or domestic vehicle?

First car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS.....POS
Second car - 2003 Saturn Vue 2.2 CVT - Love it

Rest of house is a hodgepodge of different names
Mom - 2010 - Kia Sorrento (not a half bad car)
Dad- Mom's old 2002 Santa Fe - funny story how he wound up driving it plus he doesnt drive very far so the older car isnt a big deal.
Sis - 07 VW Bug (just started driving)

So actually up until the Hyundais my house was all domestic as when i was a kid it was a 95 Ford Windstar and before it was a 92 Mercury Sable. So interesting hodgepodge. Im going to have a good laugh if the Saturn i own outlives the Hyundai. 82,000 on the Saturn and 72-73 on the Hyundai

1) 1963 International Travelall (now there's something you don't see every day!)

2) 1969 Chevy Blazer (known as the "Blaze" because the "r" fell off on the driver's side).

3) 1963 Chevy pickup (Not inlcuding the first rebuild of a Ford Model A engine, my first engine build -- I built a 283 with Corvette Hi-compression heads and put it into this truck).

4) 1980 Buick Skylark -- people dissed the GM X-cars, but I liked my Skylark. It had the 2.8L V6 and a 4-speed manual transmission... it was a coupe with the "Limited" trim.

5) 1981 Buick Skylark -- Also with 2.8L V6; Sedan with automatic. Did not love as much as previous Skylark, but adequate transportation.

6) 1987 Subaru STD model hatchback. Stripped down and basic, but kind of a fun, if gutless car. Kind of felt (and sounded) like a VW bug for the 80s.

7) 1989 Mazda B2200 pickup truck (purchased new). Had for 11 years and put 151K miles on this truck before giving it away. Made it into my first "art car."

8) 1989 Honda Accord LX. 4-cyl, auto. Sunroof. Decent car, gutless though and seemed to cost $500 to repair everything, which it seemed to need every few months. Engine ran great, but stupid stuff like the steering rack and things like that.

9) 1999 Saturn SW2 (purchased new) -- my first Saturn. I miss this car now. Traded it in after a year and a half on my LW300 since I had gotten rid of my Mazda pickup and missed the cargo space for moving stuff.

10) 1993 Saturn SW2 -- I loved my 1999 SW2 so much that I decided to get this car to replace my Mazda pickup as my art car. Still have this car and drive it regularly (I don't commute by car every day, so I can't really call it a daily driver, but it kind of is).

11) 2001 Saturn LW300 (purchased new) -- As mentioned above. Still have this car, and the wife drives it as her sort-of daily driver; we also use it for hauling the family around on trips. I aim to keep this car going as long as possible to stave off my wife's desire to buy a minivan.

Other cars that I have as yet not put on the road:

A) 1966 Corvair Monza convertible -- and to the poster who said that the "Zaz" looks like a Corvair -- when the Corvair was introduced, the Europeans loved it. There are quite a number of European cars that borrowed from its styling, even BMW. If you look at the BMW 2002, you can see hints of the early model Corvairs, and some lines of the modern day BMWs still look like the late model Corvairs (see my avatar). It was a dream of mine since adolescence to get a Corvair, and I got one in 1990 (21 years ago). I am finally getting to restoring it now.

B) 1928 Model A Ford "Tudor" sedan -- technically my very first car. My dad bought it for me as a project when I was an adolescent for us to work on together (even as a kid I was a lover of old cars). Sadly, we never finished it, and he passed away about 9 years ago.

...
Saturns:
1993 SW2 MT 181,000 hard Boston city miles ("Rozzie")
Gone but not forgotten:
2001 LW300 ("Elle")
1999 SW2 MT
Project cars:
1966 Corvair Monza convertible
1928 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan
