A new story entry has been added:

Chat with GM's Green Guy: Brent Dewar

Quote:
The folks behind General Motors' 100th anniversary GMnext website have invited SaturnFans.com visitors to chat with GM executive Brent Dewar about GM's environmental programs and positions. Dewar, GM VP of field sales, service, and parts, has a passion for the environment. The chats represent a unique chance to ask questions about the company and how it impacts the environment.

Default Re: Chat with GM's Green Guy: Brent Dewar

He answered one of my questions:

"Will the BAS hybrid system (as found in the Aura, Malibu, and VUE) be expanded to cover more models, even though it doesn't seem to be well-recieved (possibly due to price and lack of inventory)? It sounds like a good techonology that could eventually be made standard equipment."

Answer:

"we are developing a series of hybrids from affordable to the more
advanced two mode. We continue to roll them out. Stay tuned>>>>"

I asked the following question, but it didn't get answered:

"Do you feel that US consumers themselves are a problem in
reaching higher fuel efficiencies? There are many efficient vehicles already on the market, but people still continue to purchase less efficient, larger models out of want (not need). Is the real challenge making larger vehicles more efficient?"

He said they will try to address all the unanswered questions and post them somewhere on the site.

I was surprised that most of the questions were asked by people that seemed to be researchers or reporters. Very few seemed to come from the "average Joe." There was lots of talk about ethanol, and Brent was making a big push for it.

When if ever will we start getting light duty diesel engines in GM vehicles? Right now my next vehicle will be a 2009 VW Jetta TDI unless GM can come up with a vehicle of similar or larger size that gets similar or better mileage. Why not bring a diesel powerplant for the Saturn Astra? The Opel Astra has one and gets 40%+ better fuel economy than the Astra we are getting.

I know there are emissions regulations that differ here, but VW, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Honda and Acura are all finding ways to meet the Tier II bin 5 regulations and releasing 50 state legal diesel vehicles in the next 6-12 months.

With gas prices continuing to rise GM will be left in the dust with all these pipe dreams of hydrogen and electric cars while the European and Asian manufacturers will be selling fuel efficient vehicles with technology that exists and is mature today.
