An Inside Perspective: Retooling Spring Hill

Quote:
To many fans, the former Saturn manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee is a big part of the brand's heritage. The sheer number of emails I've received about the plant from Saturn owners over the years speaks volumes for the appreciation customers have for the work

That was a great article. It always seems that when something gets good it always changes. Thank You to the people who built our saturns. Now its time for the new and future crossover owners to know what we have known since 1990.
The saturn workers turn out one fine product no matter what the badge says!

Charlie

Thank you so much for relaying the letter and if you are in contact with the author, thank them from a VERY loyal Saturn owner. I've followed Saturn all along and I'm glad to hear that the people that helped launch this company are managing well.

They should be a proud group for all they accomplished in this huge industry. Kudos to them and my very sincere wishes that they will make it through this period as do many "parents" do as empty nesters.

I'm down here in Spring Hill pullin' out the old and now putting in the new equipment too............and that OLD GUY that wrote the letter is correct in saying that only the signs are changing, the folks that helped create the SATURN experience are ready to do the same for the Chevy Traverse, and some of the production folks are coming back in as early as Feb.4th. Feel fre to ask any questions you might have, I'll see what I can do for legit answers!

Great letter and thanks for sharing the insights as to the changes that Spring Hill is undergoing.

Those who started Saturn have a lot to be proud of - not only of the cars they build, but also in the way they were sold. A lot of people doubted Saturn when it was released because it was a brand new car being launched by a brand new company right as the county was tipping into a bad recession. Heck, there were a lot of people within GM that didn't want to see Saturn succeed. But they did it - Saturn not only survived but thrived.

Thanks to all who built the cars we drive day in and day out. They did a heck of a job with Saturn, and I'm confident that they will do just as well with the Chevy Traverse. Those in Spring Hill will again be called upon to build a great car in yet another market segment critical for GM, much like they were those many years ago.

I wonder why they chose Spring Hill to build the Traverse exclusively? Will there be enough sales to support the plant all by itself or are there other future plans for Spring Hill after the Traverse gets running?

I expected that the Traverse would get build in the same plant where the Outlook/Acadia/Enclave are since they're all on the same platform...

It sounds funny saying "Spring Hill" and not saying "Saturn" in the same sentence, but I'm glad that some of the employees there will still have jobs regardless of what they're building. Wouldn't it be interesting if the Traverse got better build quality ratings than the other 3?

Yep, wouldn't it...........and from a "brown field" plant at that.....
I like to feel that we're all (all of GM) intensively focused on mixing it up at the top with those other manufacturers that are perceived as "world-class" leaders in the industry. Take the "new" Malibu for instance.........

It's going to be weird seeing a Chevrolet come out of the Spring Hill plant. I figure eventually other vehicles will be assembled there, but if GM/Chevrolet plans to make at least 200,000 saleable units of Traverse, that would explain why it isn't being assembled in Delta Township.

Not only that, but from what I've been hearing, Delta Township is running two shifts and still can't keep up with demand for the Acadia and the Enclave in particular.

I've heard rumors of three month waiting lists for Enclaves.

If I posted here 2 years ago and said that there was a Buick coming out that would cause a 3 month waiting list, would anyone have believed me???

Its about time that they built a Buick that generated that kind of interest. Too bad it isn't a car... I think the Lucerne is beautiful but I don't see many on the road...

They are all over the Enterprise lots down here. Gotta wonder why they'd be dumping them into fleets at gouged prices (Enterprise pays very little for cars.) when actual customers want them.

Thank you everyone in Spring Hill for all you've done for all of us! It will never be forgotten - you triumphed where many said failure was the only option. Saturn is a fantastic brand and Spring Hill is a great place. I surely wished I could have participated in a jamboree there.
