Default Sneak Peak at Some of Saturn's Colors for 2009

A new story entry has been added:

Sneak Peak at Some of Saturn's Colors for 2009

Quote:
Saturn is unique in the way it values the opinions of its customers. A few months ago, the company polled some owners and fans, asking them for help naming seven new colors that it plans to make available on its cars and crossover trucks during the 2009 model year. Saturn carefully reviewed all of the suggestions that were submitted and chose the names it felt best represented the brand's image.

I miss Strom Grey though. That was one of the best colours ever and it was so short lived. It really 'popped.' My friend has a Storm Grey ION QC, such a nice colour. Techno Grey was not as nice, too dull. That Silver Moss is like a greeny version of Storm Grey, but I liked the blueish undertones of Storm Grey. The silver on my 2002 SC1 was a really great silver too. For some reason though, my car looked like a brighter silver than all the other 2001s and 2002s that I parked next to. Maybe it was the wax. Eagle1's Nano Wax

Saturn can name their new colors whatever they like so long as they still offer plain, basic black.

Only if it's built on a stronger-than-a-horny-buck spaceframe. And maybe it's just my monitor, or the fact that in the pic, it's surrounded by colors, but that version of eggplant seems a bit neutral, a la the old "silver plum". Another .

You might want to get that mintor checked. It looks to be quite a deep purple on mine. Maybe they can bring back Storm Grey and rename it Smoke on the Water.

Rest easy, Jerryguy, the basic colors aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

I also don't think all nine colors will be available across the Saturn line. My feeling is most will be model-specific.

I'm not sure that's entirely true:

On the 2008 Aura models (at least when I was purchasing a few months ago), they had dropped 2007's ''Onyx Black'' (a straight, gloss black) in favor of ''Carbon Flash,'' which is more like a black metallic or deep charcoal. Apparently, someone in higher-ups feels like they're onto something big by ditching basic black - because I see this happening on several other GM models, as well.

Very few metallic blacks look good, and never do they look better than straight-black. I know there's a mild argument that these metallic blacks appear cleaner for a longer period between washes, and that they're easier to maintain, etc.... But even with all that, I prefer gloss black over any ''variations'' of black. I think that most people who want a black car know what they're getting into.

In any case, that's really what steered me toward buying a late 2007 model, instead. I hope that these ''custom'' versions of black, like Carbon Flash, are just a flash-in-the-pan for GM cars. When I replace my Aura several years down the road, I intend for it to be with another GLOSS BLACK painted car. That's how I feel today of course, and there's a small chance that I could want something different by then. But if I DO still want a black car, and if GM at that time doesn't offer a straight-up black paint color in the model I want, they're probably going to lose a very loyal customer.

...
Now: 07 Saturn Aura XR 3.6 Black / 04 Olds Bravada Final 500 Dark Cherry (both paid for!)
Then: 02 Olds Alero GLS / 01 Olds Aurora 3.5 / 95 Ford T-Bird LX-V8
In Fam: 05 Buick LaCrosse CXS

Not bad, but some are predictable. Also, the words 'eggplant' and 'moss' don't really play to Saturn's newly found sophistication. Here's my genius-like input:

Fathom Blue
Neptune
Crystaline Red
Hydro Blue
Merlot
Titanium
Slate Green

The names are more useful if they accurately represent the color of the object for which they're named, more than the "image" of the brand. I *might* buy an eggplant that was the color of a typical Merlot, but I wouldn't drink a Merlot if it were the color of a typical eggplant (which that color panel more closely resembles).

Or, more meaningfully, if I ordered a car with a color of "Merlot", I would expect it to be more maroon than purple.
