A new story entry has been added:

Workers Strike Astra Plant, Production Resumes Three Hours Later

Quote:
Production of the Saturn and Opel Astra resumed around 1:30pm today following a brief three hour strike that halted assembly of GM's popular compacts. "It looks like we're in the clear," a Saturn insider told SaturnFans.com this afternoon. The spontaneous strike momentarily suspended production of the Saturn Astra at a critical time.

I wonder if the GM accountants allowed for the costs of this sort of thing when they made the decision to manufacture the Astra in Europe. Although I suppose using Spring Hill for the Astra wasn't a real choice in 2008, I doubt that such a labor action would have happened in the same way there. Regardless I hope they have it straightened out and that some of the old Saturn team concept can be established with the European workers.

@John -- Did you not read about the UAW strike that lasted for days not too long ago? ALL GM union workers, across the board, on strike... why? Because apparently $45 an hour + unGODLY health care benefits PLUS a PENSION just ISN'T ENOUGH? Weak sauce. It doesn't cost that much to train someone to do these jobs. I know my brother would LOVE to get a job paying half that with half the benefits, and most of those union factory workers have no more skill or education than the average high school grad.

Dante- I believe that a company wide strike when a new contract has not been agreed upon and a strike at a single plant over a limited item related to "irregular pay" are very different matters. I don't believe the latter is common in the US auto industry.

Personally I am a lot more familiar with the steel industry than the auto industry in these matters. IMO there was plenty of blame to go around among both labor and management in that industry and that is why the steel plant where many of my family worked for decades was shut down years ago. The reason I was originally attracted to Saturn was the unique labor/management relationship that existed in the early years of the company. I still think it was an approach that had great potential had both sides been really committed to making it work. The loss of that original approach irks me far more than the loss of plastic panels
