2002 L-Series 2.2L Sedan
Default GM issues L Series Timing Chain Recall!

Hey guys,

I did not see this posted on any of the L series forums. If no one has, this deserves to be a sticky note. Anyways...

Many of you may be interested to know that GM has issued a recall on the infamous timing chain for L series cars. At this point I have only seen the recall listing the 2001 model year which is a bit surprising/disappointing.

From a personal standpoint (mine failed on me in January) I have a 2002 model. I dont know if this means I can apply to have my repair bill refunded from Saturn or not. But it certainly gives me some ammunition I would think.

Here is an excerpt from the recall (which is found on the NHTSA website)

NHTSA Campaign Number: 07V-519
Mfg’s Report Date: November 7, 2007
Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Potential Number of Units Affected: 20,514
Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.2L 4-CYLINDER
ENGINE, AN ELEVATED RATE OF ENGINE TIMING CHAIN LINK SEPARATION
HAS OCCURRED.
Consequence:
IF A TIMING CHAIN LINK SEPARATES WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, THE
ENGINE WILL STALL AND WILL NOT RESTART INCREASING THE RISK OF A
CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JANUARY 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876.

Default Re: GM issues L Series Timing Chain Recall!

My insurance company notified me that my vehicle type had a recall for the timing chain. I called Saturn and they said although the recall was for my vehicle make, model, and year, that the recall was VIN # specific, and my VIN # wasn't included. What BS! My 2001 Saturn L200 timing chain broke shortly after that, while i was driving on the highway doing 70 mph. It' s possible the timing chain failure caused more internal damage to the engine, but that will have to be looked at. It's gonna cost around $1400 to repair the timing chain, but that may or may not be the only damage now. If there's more damage, I may need a rebuild or new engine ranging up to $6500. GM/Saturn said there was nothing they could do about the my VIN not being included in the recall.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!
