Information SaturnFans.com on Location as the IIHS Crashes a 2008 Vue

Safety has always been one of the hallmarks of Saturn design. From their spaceframe constructed cars in the 1990s, to its latest reinforced steel unibody models of today, Saturn takes pride in engineering vehicle structures that protect passengers in all sorts of crashes. I've always been fascinated by the survivor stories that Saturn owners have shared with me over the years, so when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) invited SaturnFans.com for special opportunity to watch as they crash tested an all-new 2008 Saturn Vue – live and in person – I jumped at the chance to see how the vehicle would perform.

Nice trip! I find it amazing when the GM engineer on Autoline Detroit was asked about the weight problem of the 2008 VUE he started out saying that it was one of their "older chassis".

I appreciate the fact that the "older chassis" always did a stand up job protecting it's passengers. Except for a few of it's early years where the front passenger got 4 stars, all the other tests were 5 star ratings. Only the roll over was less. I hope the stability control on the 2008 helps this rating...

If the current crash tests do well? It will be a continuing testimony to the original Saturn engineers who did such a fine job making the VUE one of the safest SUV's on the road.

It will be interesting how well the true Opel chassis that Saturn will be selling in the future will test...

Did anyone play "Taps" as the last Saturn rolled out of Spring Hill?

Thanks for the pictures and write-up! It looks like the VUE did well, judging by those images, getting an "acceptable" structural rating, and likely an overall "good" rating.

The VUE also has active head restraints, so it has a chance at getting the IIHS's "Top Safety Pick" award ("good" frontal offset, "good" side impact, "good" head restraint score, and stability control).

I'm curious to see if the extra safety goodie had any effect. It would be horrible if they added to the injury scores...

Does anyone know when they will release the results?

The 2008 Saturn Vue was awarded the IIHS' "Top Safety Pick" designation earlier this morning.

Why does it say that the VUE "built after December 2007" gets the top pick? How is it different from pre-December VUEs?

from the IIHS website:
"Two tests of the VUE were conducted. In the first test, the side curtain airbag did not deploy properly, and the rear passenger dummy's head was hit by the window sill of the rear door. This impact did not produce high head injury measures, but the head protection was inadequate. In response, General Motors redesigned the side curtain airbags to ensure more rapid inflation and greater extension of the airbag next to the rear dummy's head. In the second test, the fix was successful, and the head protection rating improved to Good.
"

it looks like GM will integrate the new rear side curtain airbags in post-December production vehicles, thus the "date" qualifier on the test results.

Does that mean pre-December Vues are unsafe and will be recalled?

Here is the IIHS' explananation:
"Another area where safety is improving is occupant protection in side impacts. More 2008 model vehicles include as standard equipment side airbags designed to protect people's heads. The Saturn was side tested twice. In the first test, the side curtain airbag didn't deploy properly, and the head of the dummy positioned in the back seat was struck by the sill of the window in the door. This impact didn't produce high head injury measures, but head protection was inadequate. In response, General Motors redesigned the side curtain airbag to ensure more rapid inflation and better coverage of the airbag next to the dummy's head. In the second test, the fix was successful, and the VUE's side rating improved from acceptable to good. Top Safety Pick applies to VUEs built after December 2007."

It sounds like it isn't necessarily unsafe, but the new design is better.

I doubt there will be a recall unless the "improper inflation" is more serious than it seems.

It would seem that if they made the fix by the next day to the second vehicle to allow its airbag to deploy quicker, it is probably just a simple change in a sensor or controller, etc., and not a wholesale redesign of the vehicle ... wouldn't this be reasonable to assume?

If the above assumption is correct and all new Vues coming off the line will be upgraded in December, if not by recall, then it doesn't seem unreasonable for Saturn to have this safety upgrade be handled with a service bulletin for the dealers to take care of.

Of course the lawyers may win out and tell Saturn not to do this and to try to let the issue disappear.
