Default first oil change at 100k miles??

Hi

I just bought an 07 Ion. So far a good car. My wife likes it. Happy wife happy life.
When we were looking at it on the lot the sales guy said something about the car not needing an oil change for 100,000 miles. When I asked he gave me kind of a blow off answer about technology and quality of the oil. The conversation turned quickly at that point so I didn't pursue the comment any further. The car is now at just 2700 miles and planning to go to the local lube place on the corner and have them change the oil.

Has anyone heard of this, oil change at 100k? Or is the sales guy just blowing smoke up my tail pipe? Just can't help but wonder.

Thanks

that would void your warranty and all that. Who knows, maybe he is looking forward to selling you another car after your engine blows up

the car will probably go anywhere from 5-8,000 miles before you need an oil change depending on your driving. just go by the oil life monitor and your warranty will not be voided. 100k isnt gonna happen though, no matter what he tells you, but you don't really need to have it changed every 3000 either.

my redline and my wife's aura both go around 8000 before the oil life runs out according to the monitor.

Think the sales guy got transmission fluid confused with oil.

Don't ever take car advice from sales guys, especially one that says don't change the oil for 100,00 miles.

Don't go to jiffy lube, valvoline, walmart or any other quick lube place if you plan on keeping your car for a while. The best place is the dealer because they keep track of your service. If there are ever any engine problems they will have it on their computer that you did all of the service. If your engine craps out and you went to jiffy lube for all your oil changes, they will ask you for your receipts. If you don't have them you are SOL. The may also determine that the filters jiffy lube uses are not up to the quality of a GM filter and not cover you either.
If you don't want to go to the dealer, then go to a reputable local garage and have them use a gm approved filter.

No, that's VERY wrong, LOL.

Should be changed at either 3,000 miles (for regular oil), or 5,000-7,000 miles for synthetic.

No: The quick lube places meet all warranty requirements.Check your owner's manual, check the disclaimers at the chains. That is a fallacy. So long as you have the required service done at the proper intervals your warranty is in force no matter who does the work.

Keeping the receipts is the most important whether you do it yourself, use the dealer, the corner shop or a chain. Jiffy Lube keeps all records as well, allowing you to chart what you have done. They are also connected into a main data base so that any JL shop you use will have your records available.

Never had a problem with one and have been using them and the dealer for the past 27 or so years. That's not to say others have not had a problem, just that I haven't.If they were as bad as people claimed they would have folded up and gone away by now.

100,000 miles is what is recommended for the "tune up" [spark plug change, essentially] under "normal" driving conditions. Again, read the owner's manual. The salesman was either ignorant or meant something else. There's no manufacturer that recommends 100,000 mile oil changes.

The dealer will tell you 3 months or 3000 miles whichever comes first. So will Jiffy Lube. Your owner's manual says use the "oil life" light and to change within 600 miles of it's coming on. That could be anywhere between 3000 and 5000 miles or more. I've never had it come on yet, but go 3000 miles between changes because LA traffic is not "normal" use, but severe duty.

go by the oil life monitor. the 3mo/3K rule is old and outdated. 100K is for the spark plugs.

Just a bit of mis-information here.

The saturn ion has the oil life monitor computer on the dash. It goes based on your driving and suggests when you should change the oil. You can go up to 4500-5000 miles on any API SM 5w30 oil. If you want to get into real extended drains, have the oil sampled, and see what combo works best for you.

Right now, I picked up 50 bottles of Kendall (conoco phillips) 5w30 semi-synthetic for $1.10 per quart.

I'm running that for 4500 miles, and not using the OLM.

Comes to about a 9 dollar oil change with the expensive cartridge filter.

As for the OP's topic... the trans fluid is not scheduled to be changed until 100k miles but this comes from the same school of thought as 100k spark plugs. You don't quite get there, but its a good selling point.

I guess your right about the spark plugs because the DEX-COOL anti freeze coolant should be changed at 150,000 miles or five years which ever comes first as stated in the little book thats in the glove box of all FOUR of my ION's

Had a secretary try that with a 1995 Corolla, just added oil. She believed it was a maintenance free car. The engine died at 45k from an oil related problem. Had to replace the engine...

I bought a new Ion3 - 2.4L September 1 - now has 3050 miles and I'm changing the oil tomorrow - Castrol Synthetic with Purolator Premium filter. After this I'll change it every 5-6K miles.

The system said I was good until 13,000 miles.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I'm not going 13K between changes!!

Changing the oil is the cheapest, best insurance for any car.
