Question Vue Gas Gauge Died. Anyone?

Recently after filling up, I have been told that the gauge only read 3/4 full, then just went completely below E and stays there. Only a small amount of movement at start up and than back down below E. Anyone seen this ?

Idea Could be faulty gas

In Canada, Shell admitted that for a little while the additive in their gas caused the fuel gauges of mostly Chrysler cars to go haywire. Whatever additive it was caused some tar build up around the fuel sensor. In their own quiet way, Shell have been compensating some complaining victims.

So if a brand name can cause this problem, can you imagine what a no-brand gas outlet can do to your car.

BTW I have always filled up at Shell because of the AirMiles and did not encounter this problem with my 2000 LS1.

Dizzy

If tar can ACTUALLY built-up in the fuel tank (HOW could TAR build-up in gasoline, it dissolves tar you know? ), imagine this stuff is burning in your motor...... :o:

Your VUE may have a faulty fuel gauge (maybe a loose Ground wire....) Just bring back to the Dealer and let them fix, it's under warranty anyway.

Idea Shell outlines response to fuel system reports

Shell outlines response to fuel system reports

Monday May 27, 2002

Calgary, Alberta - Shell Canada would like to clarify reports on fuel system difficulties some customers have experienced and outline actions the company has taken to deal with this situation.

Shell moved quickly to address customer reports of malfunctioning fuel gauges or fuel pump issues creating difficulties starting their engines. The problems have occurred in a narrow range and limited number of vehicles and may be related to trace deposits forming on fuel system components.

Shell Canada’s investigation indicated a combination of factors were present when customers experienced these difficulties, including Shell’s proprietary gasoline additive package. As a precautionary measure, in March 2002, Shell Canada altered the fuel additive and initiated communication through Shell’s retail network for affected customers. Most recent reports to Shell from customers and auto dealerships indicate these issues occurred primarily in the Alberta and Quebec regions.

Recent tracking has been indicating the frequency of fuel system issues has subsided.

A few customers have been reporting issues that appear to be mostly from the period prior to the additive being altered. Customers who have experienced fuel system issues described above are encouraged to contact Shell CUSTOMER SUPPORT CENTRE at 1-866-900-9100 or for general inquiries 1-800-661-1600. Shell has been reimbursing, and will continue to reimburse individual customer claims for related repair expenses.

"To our affected customers, we extend our sincere apology for any inconvenience this problem may have caused. Shell Canada stands behind the quality of our products. All of our fuels meet or exceed Canadian standards as well as our own stringent internal specifications. We want to reassure our customers that our gasolines are appropriate for use in all automobiles and driving conditions," said Terry Blaney,Vice President, Marketing, Shell Canada Limited.

Even if you buy a brand name gas you can have problems. It also depends on when the stations change the filters. I went to an Exxon and something went wrong where I got rust in the tank. Drove 1 mile car stopped (3 of us did). Had to flush tank lines etc. I didn't pay of course. I used non-branded gas on my L and other cars never had problems

I go to chevron now, but I'm worried as they didn't seem too... 'enthused' about changing the filter. This one gas station has had numerous weirdness with their pumping system, so I'm trying another one to see how they fare.

I mean, having some service guy doubt my comment that there was a problem with the pump since it isn't pumping gas (get .25 gallon then stop), and then and blames my saturn for causing it????

Thumbs Up

I thought it was rather coincidental that this thing went out the day before the dealer threw the new owner shindig. Did not get to go to the one for the 94 so I decided to go.

Ironically, the gauge started to "work" again, not really, it moved but was no where near what it should have been reading. Got to ask the tech what was up and this is what he said.

There are two sensors in the tank that send out the levels. He thinks that maybe one of them is out. I guess I'll have the full story next Friday when they can "squeeze" me in.

P.S. The shindig was a total waste of time. They could not have displayed anymore, "we really do not want to be doing this" attitude. But what can you do

BP Amoco, Chevron and Texaco are my primary choices........but sometimes you just don't know what you fill up with at the Service Area Gas stations.

Any update on the gauge issue. Mine just started this 3/4 reading when full.
Thanks,

If the Sulfur content is high it can cause problems with contacts and cuase bad readings on the gas gauge. Shell had a similar problem in the US in the South as reported before in Canada.
