GM HCCI Gas Engine

The highlights are 15% mpg improvement and EcoTec 2.2. producing 180HP and 170lbs-ft.

After reading the lengthy article, I am still not 100% sure on how this engine works.

Does the HCCI engine use a high (20:1) compression ratio to ignite the fuel mixture like a diesel?

High compression (relative to gas engines, not diesels) and a lean air/gas mixture. The spark plugs are only used to ignite the mixture during cold starts, otherwise heat and compression ignite it.
