2005 VUE 3.5L
Default Spring Hill, TN Plant

Hello, Which cars are now being built at the Spring Hill, TN Location and what are the future plans for that plant? Do they still allow Tours there? I hear that the 2008 Vues will be built in Mexico and no longer have Honda V6 Engines offered. Is this true? Doesnt sound good to me. Tennessee Jobs sent to Mexico and No more Honda engines. Please reply anyone. James

Spring Hill won't be building anything until around August next year or so. That's when the Chevy Traverse is supposedly slated to come online, so no jobs lost. The VUE moving to Mexico and the loss of the Honda 3.5L aren't entirely bad things. With the cheaper labor, we get a better overall package with a superior 3.6L/6-speed powertrain.

In your Humble Opinion... IMHO it has been a BAD move building the VUE in Mexico and switching to the GM 3.6L V6. Other than a quieter ride there isn't anything that the 2008 VUE does better than the old one.

BobbyP, Is Honda's pre-IVTEC J35 (L66 for Saturn's purposes ) that much better than the LY7? The 3.6L engine itself is not inferior; the quarter-ton increase in curb weight from the previous generation doesn't help.

BobbyP,,maybe on paper the new VUE doesn't do anything better, but to drive it, ah, that's another story. It just feels so much better, much more substantial and well built than the original, esp in the interior, where the old one fell short. but thats just IMHO.

I think the VUE is being built in Mexico because GM had some extra capacity because of the Rendezvous going off the market but didn't think there would be enough sales of the VUE to build it at SH.

The new VUE is built in Mexico, where the Buick Rendezvous used to be built. The new Buick Enclave is replacing the Rendezvous as Buick's crossover SUV, and is built in GM's new plant in Michigan. The Spring Hill plant is likely to build a Chevy variant of the Lambda platform that the Enclave is also built on. No jobs seem to have been lost, just shifted around.

The Honda engine was never a permanent deal, it was a contract which ended.

You do realize that the Fairfax plant that builds the AURA is in Kansas, the Lansing Delta Township plant that builds the OUTLOOK is in Michigan, and the Wilmington plant that builds the SKY is in Delaware, all built with a large majority of domestically sourced parts, right?

The 3.6L is not a bad engine, just not as refined as the L66 it replaced. It's just not as smooth. It's not just me, read the review in Motor Trend about the new CTS, they mentioned a granular quality to the engine.

I have driven the new VUE and the only thing that stood out was how silent it was. The hydraulic steering wasn't as dramatic of improvemnt everyone felt it would be. I'm also comparing it to my Red Line VUE.

I'd say the bolded text is why. The differences on Red Line VUEs jade your thoughts (don't take it offensively, I don't mean it to be so). VUE Red Lines are a small part of the VUE's sales...try comparing a regular '07 to a regular '08.

According to recent reports, that is. IIRC, you're in the building and are probably more versed in the plans than is Ms. Priddy. I'd hope so, at least. I couldn't stand being in the dark about future employment. I'd go nuts.

What exactly is "not as smooth" about it? I'd like a description of what you're "feeling" here that wasn't in the L66.

Agreed. On paper, I was a major skeptic of the new VUE. Having driven one, I am quite optimistic about Opel/Saturn. The new VUE handles significantly better and soak up bumps with such aplomb it's hard to believe it's not a complete redesign. The interior is quiet without being a tomb and all the materials just feel great.

Considering you're a fellow Aura XR owner, I'm sure you can attest that the LY7 3.6 is not the smoothest of motors. For me, it's actually one of the roughest new car motors I've experienced.

The Mexican factories can build quality products as good as anywhere else. Ask VW.

As far as the Honda V6 is concerned, GM's 3.6 litre V6 with the 6 speed gearbox combo is as good, if not better than anything Honda can produce. Ask the vast majority of the motor press.
