Attention Timing belt tool kit rental J 42069 kent moore

My wifes 2003 VUE V6 Ecotech is long over due for timing belt replacement. 120K miles. Dealer wants $600.

Not a hard job, but you do need the Kent Moore J 42069 tool to do the job correctly.

Out of frustration trying to find this tool, at a reasonable price...very soon we will be offering a 30 day rental program for this tool, or a version of it...

We are 2 weeks away from offering a GM / Saturn / Saab Ecotech V6 timing belt tool kit rental program. Way less then the $500 tool. Way less then what the dealers are charging.

Anyway, here is the link for the rental tool. Feel free to offer any feedback, pricing issues etc. The current feeling is the tool could be overnighted to you. Also, no tax.

The plan is to have 5-10 rentals ready to go at anytime. Maybe factory instuctions included.

Same tool is used on Cadillac Cateras and Saab 900, 9000 series. Also used on the Saturn LS.

Why is it part of a Cadillac LED site? We already sell Catera brake light parts. Same engine.

Comments welcome. Just trying to save everyone $$$.

What about the Honda V-6? Do you have a tool and instructions for that timing belt replacement?

.....
V6 Ecotech???? I thought the Ecotec only came in a 4 cylinder variant, and the timing belt is a chain......Also, not aware of a special tool required to change the chain (chain is supposed to last - hydraulic tensioner).

Attention Re: Timing belt tool kit rental J 42069 kent moore

Yes, the first couple of years the VUE used a Opel based V6 engine. Same engine used in the Cadillac Catera and Saabs. Ecotech V6.

There is a picture of a Ecotech V6 in a Saturn VUE on the website.

Both the Ecotech V6 and the Honda V6 use rubber timing belts.

I think the Honda engine came in 2004.

As for the Honda based timing belt kit. It's an idea to also have that available. That being said, it appears to be a under $100 kit.

I looked at the GM service manual this morning for the Honda V6. Here is the tool list for the Honda V6:

EN 46330. Timing belt tensioner retaining pin. Simple $20 tool on eBay.

EN 46331. Timing belt tensioner pully retaining bolt. Appears to be simply a bolt.

EN 46337. Camshaft sprocket/ crankshaft balancer holder.

Over all. The Honda belt replacement appears to be a much easier job with simple tools.

Do you have a link to this 'Ecotech V6'.....I know the VUE used a 3.0l V6 in the first two years, but I didn't know it was called an Ecotech....very odd.
Cheers

It would be an Ecotec, if it was called that but the Ecotec name is reserved for the four cylinder.

The tool locks the cam sprockets together. Understanding that this is all it does, can you imagine any other way one might achieve this absent the tool?

All of the tool manufacturs refer to the Opel engine as the 'Ecotech V6 engine family.'

True, it may be an incorrect description. Dont know. But they all do it. Even a company in Tawain that makes a version of the tool...refers to it as the Ecotech V6.

Here is the link for the Sealy tool. See tool description:

You really cannot do the job correctly without the timing kit tool.

The dealer charges a whopping $1,000 to change the timing belt!!!!!!!!!!! Better off making one of the mechanics there your best friend. The tool rental isn't bad if it also comes with some pretty detailed instructions.

Ok...'V6 Eco Tech' name mystery may be solved.

It appears Opel uses the name 'Eco Tec' on the V6. See picture.

Lots of threads over on the L Series Tech board on the timing belt change and how to acomplish it without tool rentals.

L-81 3.0 Series "Ecotec"? Humm, call me a doubter on that one. Nice picture of the motor though.

I had no problem replacing the belt on this engine without the specialty tools however two of these $28 ebay tools would make it even easier.
