2003 ION-1 Sedan
Default Back-up lights

I have an '03 5-speed Ion and both of my back-up lights are not working.

The bulbs are good. With the car in reverse, I unplugged the bulb and tested the contact points on the tail light assembly and only got 0.4 volts with my multimeter. Then when I unpluged the whole tail light assembly and tested the voltage of the back-up power and ground wires that run back to the front of the car and I got 12 volts.

With my little electrical knowledge, it seems like the back up light power is shorting to ground some where in the tail light assembly, but the wires look fine to me. And if it was shorting to ground, wouldn't that blow a fuse and then there would be no power going to it at all?

I read the past posts on how alot of 5-speed Ions have faulty back-up switches. What I explained here, is that something that is caused by a bad back-up switch?

Thanks for your help

-Isaac

its about a $30 part and most likely its the reverse light switch.. it shouldn't be that hard to replace..

Welcome to the Board.

The most common cause of inop reverse lights in a manual ION is the reverse switch. It is best gotten to through the LF wheel well. Two wire connector to the switch near the top of the trans.

Just to let you guys know, replacing the back-up switch fixed my problem. It was easy to replace and it was only $37.

Thanks for your help,
Isaac
