Zipped Photo Files Not Uploading

I created a zip file of 8 photos (each around 200K) by using the right click/send to compressed file option in Windows. The resulting file was 2.7Mb. I tried to upload the zip file. It seemed to upload fine and flashed to the "upload successful" screen, but rather than giving me the expected screen of pictures where I can add titles and descriptions, the browser went straight to my photos page. My photos never showed up.

When I reduced the size of the zip file to below 2Mb (by removing a couple photos from the zip file), it worked just fine. A couple questions:

1. The zip file upload size limit is 16Mb. Do the photos within that zip file still have to be less than 2Mb each?
2. What might be causing a 2.7Mb zip file to fail to upload properly while a 1.7Mb zip file works just fine?
