2002 SL2
Default Manual Transmission Fluid Check

Well, thanks to Bigdaddy, I was able to get to find my transmission dip stick and TRY to check it. The color looks pinkish, but it was really hard to determine how high up the level was because it obviously gets moist along the sides when trying to squeeze it back in there. I'm thinking it is OK, but can't be sure. Is there a recommended milage level for changing it on a standard trasnsmission?

I beleive 100k is "by the book", but since it's so easy to do, I've changed mine every 30k, figuring its cheap insurance.

Wow, I think I've changed mine once in 16 years. I thought they recommended changing it after the first 3,000 miles, but after that, there is no recommended interval to change it again. The transmission hasn't given me one bit of trouble. (Well, the stickshift did flop loose a couple years ago, but that didn't have anything to do with the transmission itself or the fluid level.)

That is what I always thought also from when I bought my `94, but I believe starting in 2000, that was no longer required for the warrany and so I didn't do it. Well, if you've only done it once in 460K miles, that is good enough proof for me.

I did mine at 111,000 miles. When I drained it, it looked like dirty water, it was really thin and dirty. I had planned on putting synthetic in, but somehow ended out putting regular ATF in. It's cheap and easy to do, so in a while I'll change to synthetic.

i replaced mine twice: once a couple years ago when i rebuilt my gearbox and once a month or so ago when i changed my clutch. after 150k miles, i couldn't tell the difference between the old stuff and the new stuff.

my recommendation: change the fluid when you change your clutch. otherwise, you'll be fine...

Saturn says to replace manual transaxle fluid once at 6000 miles. That's it. You could do it every 30,000 miles like an automatic if you wanna.
