Through the DIC. Read the manual and it tells you a lot about the vehicle.

If you have the four-button DIC (Driver Information Center), you press and hold the (left) check (set/reset) button to reset the value while any resettable item is displayed.
If you don't have the four buttons, you reset it with the same trip odometer reset stem that you use to display the Oil life remaining.

I got an oil change. When I got the vehicle back it was already reset at 100%. Isn't it reset automatically?

No, it's not reset automatically. How could the car know the oil was changed? There are no sensors to detect that. Normally the place where you get the service done will do it, but sometimes they forget. Or if you do it yourself, you need to reset it yourself.

Actually there is a very easy way the car could know you have had an oil change. All the manufacturer would have to do is put a reset switch on the oil filter. When the oil filter was removed it could reset the system. I don't know why this is not being done. The Outlook reset is relatively easy but it is amazing what you have to go through on some vehicles to reset the oil life system.

Would you really want sensor/switch/etc. near the seal of the filter?

Exactly. It's only going to cause problems, or just fail. I know of my SC1 had one, I would have busted it off by now, trying to get the filter in the proper position, when you can't see a damn thing, and you're upside down It's so worth it to go in through the wheel well, I've recently discovered.

I found that on my 2008 saturn Aura (4 button DIC) that the following steps must take place to reset the oil life:
1) place ignition swith in run position
2) cycle through features by pressing the info button until the oil life is illuminated
3) depress all 4 DIC buttons at the same time; instrument panel will read "reset oil life"
4) release all buttons
5) depress bottom button (w/left pointing arrow) and oil life will read "acknowledged"

On our '09 Outlook without the 4 button DIC: to reset the oil life turn ignition switch to the "on" position - digital displays will come up on the dash. Next, depress the odometer switch in and out until the "oil life" percentage is displayed and at that point, keep the odometer switch depressed until the display goes from whatever percentage of life was displayed originally to 100% remaining. Release the odometer switch and turn the ignition switch to the "off" position. Reset of oil life percentage accomplished. I double checked by repeating the above procedure to ensure that the oil life percentage this time displayed 100%.
